Historia
Anthony Bourdain’s death by suicide in June 2018 shocked people around the world. Bourdain seemed to have it all: an irresistible personality, a dream job, a beautiful family, and international fame. The reality, though, was more complicated than it seemed. Bourdain became a celebrity with his bestselling book Kitchen Confidential. He parlayed it into a series of hit television shows, including the Food Channel’s Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations and CNN’s Parts Unknown. But his bad boy charisma belied a troubled spirit.

Don't bother, just read Kitchen Confidential
Revisado: 09-06-24
This book is lazy, poorly written and atrociously edited. Two thirds of the book is spent summarizing Bourdain's own books about his life, in a more boring way than Tony did. The author manages to combine cloying political correctness with a deep and obvious hatred of women. He adds nothing to the story from original research beyond a couple of throwaway comments he got from friends, He often throws doubt on Tony's accounts of his own life, but never did enough research to actually contest anything. The author didn't seem to particularly like Tony or have any real opinion on him.
The book doesn't stop summarizing KC until past halfway, and Asia Argento doesn't arrive until 7/8ths of the way through. Tony's wives merit barely any characterization, we learn nothing about them that one wouldn't learn from Wikipedia. But then we don't learn much about Tony either. The book will casually mention that he started doing steroids, but not when or why or who got him started on them. Lazy.
The only thing worse than the book is the cloying, breathy, melodramatic way it is read.

Winner of an Obie and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and directed by Tony nominee Leigh Silverman, Yellow Face is as timely as ever, wrestling with issues of cultural appropriation, complicity, and artistic freedom. It’s brought to life in this audio-only revival by a stunning all-star cast (many playing themselves) led by Daniel Dae Kim.

Absolute Masterpiece
Revisado: 05-11-24
Best performance I have listened to on Audible, hands down. I giggled uncontrollably in my car. The play does a fantastic job of advocating for the specific in such detail that the experience becomes universal. David may have set out to tell an Asian American story but his characters embrace universal themes, and he tells his story with humility and grace, from beginning to end.

Absolutely Wonderful
Revisado: 04-22-21
Really explores a classic work with new eyes. Brings out the macabre elements while remaining whimsical and lighthearted. Only criticism: if they cut out the erotic groaning I could listen to this with my niece.

Historia
Comedian Kate Willett was married to a woman and thought she'd never have to deal with men again. That is, until she found herself dumped, suddenly single, and mystifyingly...mostly attracted to dudes. Like any good comic, she was inspired to investigate, and thus ensued her hilarious, sometimes high-stakes personal research into the world of men, culminating in a beautiful, difficult romance.

Who is Lolita? The Nabokov literary classic has sparked infinite discussion in the 65 years since its release, but the cultural memory the book has left behind lives more in romance and fashion aesthetics than a cautionary tale about a deceptive predator and his young prey. Jamie Loftus wants to know how we got here, and this series traces Lolita -- the person, Dolores Haze -- from her literary origin to current status as a doomed icon.

great Material let down by delivery, production
Revisado: 03-24-21
Super interesting topic; too much music and poor, intellectually incurious, unfunny narration.
Lines like "(Freud is wrong because)... he based his analysis of psychology on mythology, which is of course fake" are the kind of pop culture pseudo intellectualism that abounds.
I did listen to it all, but I couldn't recommend it.

Historia
Dirk Struan rose from humble beginnings to build Struan & Company, also known as the Noble House, into the world’s largest Far East trading company. He is now the Tai-Pan—Supreme Leader—of all Tai-Pans in China. Along the way, however, he made a powerful enemy. Tyler Brock, Struan’s rival from their early opium-smuggling days, also heads a large trading fleet, second in size only to Struan’s. But it is not only silks and spices that drive their mutual companies’ wealth—the opium trade is still booming.

It's a fun little picaresque, but there's no punchline. Compared to Clavells other work on the Saga in Shogun and Whirlwind, it feels like he just ran out of pages and left a half dozen plots hanging.
