One of the best of this genre!
Revisado: 06-09-24
As a physician coach with a specialty I time management, I was excited to find this book. It exceeded my expectations. Although it’s not specifically for physicians, I really appreciated his practical perspective. Instead of the usual tired studies and anecdotes, the author synthesized fresh information in a very engaging and positive conversational style. Highly recommend!

A compelling reminder of a physician's humanity
Revisado: 05-12-24
In this heartfelt memoir, Beverly Joyce details a childhood that may have seemed perfect from the outside, but which in truth was complex and disorienting. As a fellow physician and a colleague of Dr. Joyce, I am left with a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the hard climb she has made and for the deeply committed care that she has provided to those who need and trust her.

Historia
For centuries, works of art have been stolen in countless ways from all over the world, but no one has been quite as successful at it as the master thief Stéphane Breitwieser. Carrying out more than two hundred heists over nearly eight years—in museums and cathedrals all over Europe—Breitwieser, along with his girlfriend who worked as his lookout, stole more than three hundred objects, until it all fell apart in spectacular fashion.

Historia
An award-winning journalist obsessed with obsession, Bianca Bosker’s existence was upended when she wandered into the art world—and couldn’t look away. Intrigued by artists who hyperventilate around their favorite colors and art fiends who max out credit cards to show hunks of metal they think can change the world, Bosker grew fixated on understanding why art matters and how she—or any of us—could engage with it more deeply.

Repetitive

The same stories were told over and over in excruciating detail. There’s so much filler here, even at 2x speed I couldn’t get through it. Too bad, because I was looking forward to learning more about this topic.

Historia
In the United States, teenagers can focus on one task for only sixty-five seconds at a time, and office workers average only three minutes. Like so many of us, Johann Hari was finding that constantly switching from device to device and tab to tab was a diminishing and depressing way to live. He tried all sorts of self-help solutions—even abandoning his phone for three months—but nothing seemed to work. So Hari went on an epic journey across the world to interview the leading experts on human attention—and he discovered that everything we think we know about this crisis is wrong.

Revisado: 06-26-23
This book is a manifesto for our times. The author is engaging and the story is both personal and universal. Like many books of this type, there is some extra filler, especially near the end, but overall a great listen and well worth the time, especially if you're listening in your car.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Facinating!
Revisado: 06-26-23
Prince Harry has gotten a bad rap in the media, but I found his story fascinating and intriguing. The narrative feels sincere, and it's important that we hear it in his own voice. Yes, he's out of touch with the everyday person, but that's not his fault. It's the world in which he was born and raised. What's interesting is that he has chosen to share it with us, seemingly without guile. He's lived a life of unimaginable privilege, but also of terrible pain. He protests his lack of privacy, but chooses to bare all, perhaps as a way of taking control of his own narrative.

Historia
The disruptions of recent years have sparked a collective reckoning, forever changing the way we think about life and work. We reprioritized our lives, reordered how we envisioned the future. The pandemic changed society in many ways, but among the most powerful was a collective rethinking of our relationship to our jobs. Millions quit the workforce in 2021 and 2022, and stunningly almost a third had no new job lined up to go to.

Can’t finish it
Revisado: 06-26-23
I got halfway through and without warning there was a gruesome story.
The other stories so far are well worn tropes we’ve heard before.
The narrator is relentlessly cheerful and just too irritating.
I expected more.

Historia
Rachel DeLoache Williams’ new friend Anna Delvey, a self-proclaimed German heiress, was worldly and ambitious. She was also generous - picking up the tab for lavish dinners at Le Coucou, infrared sauna sessions at HigherDOSE, drinks at the 11 Howard Library bar, and regular workout sessions with a celebrity personal trainer. When Anna proposed an all-expenses-paid trip to Marrakech at the five-star La Mamounia hotel, Rachel jumped at the chance. But when Anna’s credit cards mysteriously stopped working, the dream vacation quickly took a dark turn.

Fascinating story, but too much anxiety
Revisado: 11-05-19
The first part of this story is really compelling, but it got a bit draggy by the last third. The author's description of her recurrent anxiety attacks and hyperventilation get rather annoying. Clearly she was young, inexperienced, and naively trusting. We really can't hold that against her, but I wish she had received some help in managing her reaction to the situation that she found herself in. She did get to have some interesting experiences, and took for granted that her apparently wealthy friend would pay for it all. Having said that, I hope she makes a lot of money off of her story. Her "friend Anna" took advantage of her horribly, and she deserves to have some happiness.
