Historia
In this fascinating foray into the centuries-old relationship between science and military power, acclaimed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and writer-researcher Avis Lang examine how the methods and tools of astrophysics have been enlisted in the service of war. "The overlap is strong, and the knowledge flows in both directions," say the authors, because astrophysicists and military planners care about many of the same things: multi-spectral detection, ranging, tracking, imaging, high ground, nuclear fusion, and access to space. Tyson and Lang call it a "curiously complicit" alliance.

Very Informative and Eye Opening
Revisado: 03-06-19
A detailed account of the relationship between advances in science and the weaponization of those advances. From the telescope and compass, to satellites and space, the military funds and fuels scientific discovery for its own ends. The book can be depressing and scary at times if you think about the very real possibility of a nuclear world war, or the lack of funding scientists would receive if it weren't for military needs. I would recommend this book as a great resource for the overview of the politics involved in our increasing use of space and what that could mean for the future of earth.

Historia
Only mutual communication can forge an alliance with the planet's sentient species and prove that mammals are more than tools. Forced to land on a planet they aren't prepared for, human colonists rely on their limited resources to survive. The planet provides a lush but inexplicable landscape—trees offer edible, addictive fruit one day and poison the next, while the ruins of an alien race are found entwined in the roots of a strange plant. Conflicts between generations arise as they struggle to understand one another and grapple with an unknowable alien intellect.

Not as bad as the previous one...
Revisado: 02-14-18
I wanted to like this story, I am determined to finish all of the Pern books even if the ones written by Todd are more challenging to enjoy. I liked it better than the previous one, Dragonheart, but it was very annoying at points. Fiona is annoying. She isn't the wise wonderful perfect woman that everyone wants to love that the book thinks she is. I understand now that it is Todd's writing style to over explain everything instead of assuming the reader has a brain with deductive reasoning to figure out obvious things on their own. Furthermore pregnant women aren't as delicate as Todd makes them out to be, some women have to be careful because they are high risk yes, but in this book they treat woman like pregnancy means bedridden and incapable. That is annoying to a woman reader.
ALSO we don't have to be reminded every other sentence that Fiona is such a REBEL for catching tunnel snakes in her youth or that she went back in time to Igen for 3 turns. Feel free to remind us once but my goodness is it overdone.

Historia
M. Savage - or Em, as she is called - has made a bewildering and ominous discovery. She and the other young people she was chosen to lead awoke in strange coffins with no memory of their names or their pasts. They faced an empty, unknown place of twisting tunnels and human bones. With only one another to depend on, they searched for answers and found the truth about their terrifying fate. Confronted by a monstrous enemy, they vowed never to surrender - and, by any means, to survive.

A great story but...
Revisado: 02-01-18
This book, and the previous book, are great stories. The ideas, worlds, and characters are all very creative, interesting, and entertaining. The narration is fantastic, I think Emma's voice is perfect for a YA novel, not too "adult" sounding for the internal monologue of a young person but also not like a child.
However I have a few issues. To the author these issues are probably glazed over details, they don't add that much to the story but I cannot get past them.
SPOILERS!
The pregnant character is immediately told that her life isn't hers, once she became pregnant everyone (the males in the story) could tell her what she could and couldn't do. And no characters argue this. The main character being female should have at LEAST been outraged at the sexist treatment of her fellow woman and her rights as a human being not a vessel for growing humans. Young girls reading this novel do not need to get the impression that a pregnant woman is weak or property.
Second issue. The unnecessary detailed death of a kitten and an infant animal. Not just a mention at how these deaths affected the person inflicting it or watching it, but a permanent haunting description that I now have to carry in my head. As much as I enjoy the rest of the story, I have to ignore these parts to enjoy it, the possibility of those kinds of details being in the next book makes me not want to read it.

Not the ending I wanted...
Revisado: 01-15-18
The end is pretty abrupt and sad.
The narrator's voice for male characters is kind of weird and not romantic at all.
The story was interesting enough.

Not the best Pern story
Revisado: 12-27-17
I love the pern stories, and I didn't think I'd really be able to tell that Anne didn't write this, but it is surprisingly very different. I don't prefer Todd's style of describing every little thing the main characters feel (mostly Fiona). It's too much description in the sense that it leaves nothing for the reader to infer so it feels more like a lecture than a story absorbing you. I was actually irritated at points during Dragonheart because it was stretching so long unnecessarily. The overall story arch is an interesting concept and should make for an intriguing read (listen) but I was very glad to finish it and will have to put off reading the next one so I don't end my beloved pern on a sour note.
The narrator is actually much better in Dragonheart than she is in Dragon's Time (which I mistakenly read prior to this one which chronologically comes before it), she has much more feeling in her voice and doesn't sound like an AI at all.

Historia
For the first time in more than three years, best-selling authors Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey have teamed up again to do what they do best: add another chapter to the Dragonriders of Pern. Even though Lorana cured the plague that was killing the dragons of Pern, sacrificing her queen dragon in the process, the effects of the disease were so devastating that there are no longer enough dragons available to fight the fall of deadly Thread. And as the situation grows more dire, a pregnant Lorana decides that she must take drastic steps in the quest for help.

Narrator isn't a robot?
Revisado: 11-13-17
I very much thought when I started listening to this that the narrator was a program reading a book to me. She is not an android however, that's just how she talks. You get used to it but it's a bit weird. The book is ok, I love all of the Pern Novels this one included, but it does feel a little disjointed. It's probably the excessive use of the "timing" element which isn't my favorite. I have tried to read this book several times and kept stopping, it was much easier to listen to because the narrator propels you forward if you get lost or bored. I do enjoy the attempt to normalize polyamory and the message to love everyone it seems this book is trying to convey.

Historia
A young, naïve but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals—in stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg—whose true name is hidden from all he and Dunk encounter. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two . . . as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits. Featuring more than 160 all-new illustrations by Gary Gianni, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a must-have collection that proves chivalry isn’t dead—yet.

Mixed Feelings
Revisado: 11-13-17
The narrator is great at conveying emotion and telling a story, however to do this he sometimes whispers making it impossible to hear him. If the volume is turned up in headphones you can probably make out the inner monologues that he uses the whisper for, but I listened mostly while driving and even with the volume up all the way could not hear him so I missed 1/3 of the book.
As for the stories, there are 3 separate "books" in this volume, they are alright. They're good short stories but they don't really scratch the Game of Thrones itch. The hero of the story is made purposefully dumb, a tad overdone.
Overall the narration and story are just fine.
