Historia
Welcome to Eris: An island with only one house, one inhabitant, one way out. Unreachable from the Scottish mainland for twelve hours each day. Once home to Vanessa: A famous artist whose notoriously unfaithful husband disappeared twenty years ago. Now home to Grace: A solitary creature of the tides, content in her own isolation. But when a shocking discovery is made in an art gallery far away in London, a visitor comes calling. And the secrets of Eris threaten to emerge . . .

No ending. Unfinished.
Revisado: 01-07-25
Helena, Sebastian, Emmaline, and Marguerite are pointless in the plot. Needs a really good edit. Seemed like Hawkins needed to “wrap it up” at the end, but couldn’t work out how. The reader will never know what happened to the most sympathetic and least sympathetic characters — Becker and Grace.

After hunters discover human remains inside a bear's stomach, McCain is thrust into the investigation. As more dead women are found in McCain's region, authorities suspect a serial killer is prowling the mountains he knows best. McCain will need his knowledge as an outdoorsman, and his instincts as an investigator, to track the psychopathic predator.

Poor narration. Okay story.
Revisado: 08-07-23
Good book for gun lovers and fishermen. Lots of gun, vehicle and wildlife description/detail. Mediocre story. The narrator up-talked whenever he spoke the dialogue of the only female law enforcement officer — A 14 year old girls allowed in law enforcement.?

Historia
Rita Todacheene is a forensic photographer working for the Albuquerque police force. Her excellent photography skills have cracked many cases—she is almost supernaturally good at capturing details. In fact, Rita has been hiding a secret: she sees the ghosts of crime victims who point her toward the clues that other investigators overlook. As a lone portal back to the living for traumatized spirits, Rita is terrorized by nagging ghosts who won’t let her sleep and who sabotage her personal life.

Boring. Overrated because of its niche marketing appeal, probably.
Revisado: 07-01-23
I tried to return this title, but couldn’t. Ended up listening to it while doing chores, hoping it would eventually deserve the good reviews, The main character, Rita, a Navaho forensics photographer is a passive observer of the plot as it unfolds. (Too much technical photography chitchat, too.) The crime plot is a cliché, and is dropped for big chunks of the novel. The ghosts and grandmother are more tedious than the main character. I imagine that the description of Navaho cultural repression have given this novel an underserved higher weighting. Honestly, there are so many better works which deal with indigenous issues. Overrated. Save your money.

Good except for the American narrator.
Revisado: 04-03-23
I’ve listened to the Rockton series and now Haven’s Rock for light entertainment - romance, the detective who often stumbles, villains who deserve their fate. I wish it were set in Alaska, however. Then the narrator wouldn’t struggle so much when pronouncing Newfoundland, stumble over the pronunciation of very simple French words - Dieu, français/e, toque - or make so many of the rougher characters sound like they grew up in the American South. Her tonal expression is pleasing and skillful, but she needs to look at a map (and rehearse).

Saving Sophie
Revisado: 11-13-21
At one point a character who “explicates” much of the historical background for the action is chided for her long “lessons”. I felt this too as a reader — that I was being lectured with great chunks of text. If this were a printed book, I imagine a Forward might have saved the narrative flow. Am I going to read or listen to this author again? Probably not. Did I finish listening — yes. If the reader wants to digest a history lesson with a story, enjoy.

What disappointed you about Sherlock Holmes: The Definitive Collection?
After Chapter 40, it is impossible to choose any of the next 60 or so chapters at random. The default selection is chapter 40. Don't try rewinding either after Chapter 40. Love Stephen Frye. Hate the quality of the audiobook. I want my money back.
