Great Program, Terrible Production
Revisado: 01-05-25
Regrettably, the production value of this audiobook is beyond terrible to the extent that it interferes with listening. Considering the ready availability of technology, this version should be trashed and remastered or replaced. It sounds as if it was digitized from cassette tapes made in the 80s.

Historia
Why is Miami… Miami? What does the heartbreaking fate of the cheetah tell us about the way we raise our children? Why do Ivy League schools care so much about sports? What is the Magic Third, and what does it mean for racial harmony? In this provocative new work, Malcolm Gladwell returns to the subject of social epidemics and tipping points, this time with the aim of explaining the dark side of contagious phenomena. Through a series of gripping stories, Gladwell traces the rise of a new and troubling form of social engineering

An intriguing reexamination of concepts Gladwell introduced previously. The presentation remains as prescient and eye-opening as his other works, with particularly (and tragic) insight into relatable phenomena.

Terrible Technical Defficiency
Revisado: 11-27-24
The work is what it is. The performance is engaging. The digital cues and chattering make listening to this excruciatingly difficult. Many cues do not work, forcing you to go back to the chapters and scroll through 100(+) of them to manually navigate back to your place. I’m blown away that this mega fail on the world of digital media is allowed to persist. Find another version!!

Historia
Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It’s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to become Southern California’s first giraffes. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow.

Historia
In the past five years, Israel has mounted three major assaults on the 1.8 million Palestinians trapped behind its blockade of the Gaza Strip. Taken together, Operation Cast Lead (2008-9), Operation Pillar of Defense (2012), and Operation Protective Edge (2014) have resulted in the deaths of some 3,700 Palestinians. Meanwhile a total of 90 Israelis were killed in the invasions. On the face of it, this succession of vastly disproportionate attacks has often seemed frenzied and pathological.

Revisado: 09-13-24
I’ve been searching for at least attempted objective perspective on the Israel-Palestine issue. I did not find it here, nor is this title unique in that respect. If you are anti-Israel and want an echo-chamber of sound bites, you’ll find it.

Historia
Drawing on a wealth of untapped archival materials and the reports of generations of family members - mayors, judges, scholars, diplomats, and journalists - The Hundred Years' War on Palestine upends accepted interpretations of the conflict, which tend, at best, to describe a tragic clash between two peoples with claims to the same territory. Instead, Khalidi traces a hundred years of colonial war on the Palestinians, waged first by the Zionist movement and then Israel, but backed by Britain and the United States, the great powers of the age.

Dense and very Pro-Palestinian
Revisado: 08-10-24
What you might expect on the topic given the title. I am trying to educate myself on the complex and highly politicized issue and this title needed, I felt, to be taken with an immense grain of salt. Perhaps the author is too close to the issue for objectivity, which is a challenge on related topics. The passion and care for exhaustive work is there, as are the political positions and emotions that yield thinly veiled editorial content.

Historia
Finding and identifying a pirate ship is the hardest thing to do under the sea. But two men—John Chatterton and John Mattera—are willing to risk everything to find the Golden Fleece, the ship of the infamous pirate Joseph Bannister. At large during the Golden Age of Piracy in the seventeenth century, Bannister should have been immortalized in the lore of the sea—his exploits more notorious than Blackbeard’s, more daring than Kidd’s. But his story, and his ship, have been lost to time.

Most incidents and accidents are down to "human error". Unfortunately, human error is normal and common, and we can't get rid of it. However, we can reduce the likelihood of one of those - "oh shit moments" - if we have an understanding of human factors and develop our non-technical skills. This is a globally unique book containing decades of research and practice from high-risk domains translated into the world of recreational and technical diving.
