Historia
On the surface, Denny Voss’s life in rural Minnesota is a quiet one. At thirty years old, he lives at home with his elderly mother and his beloved blind and deaf Saint Bernard, George. He cleans up roadkill to help pay the bills. Though his prospects are limited by a developmental delay—the result of an accident at birth—Denny has always felt that he has “a good life.” So how did he wind up being charged with the murder of a mayoral candidate—after crashing a sled full of guns into a tree?

Good Listen
Revisado: 04-29-25
I enjoyed the book. The characters were great, and well portrayed.
If you're going to listen to this, and you're Not a rabid believer in heavy handed leftist ideology, then hit "Stop" as soon as the book is over. The author's note afterwards is long and left a bit of a rusty taste in the back of my throat.

Historia
Outside Los Angeles, a driver pulls up to find a young woman sitting on a large black box. She offers him $200,000 cash to transport her and that box across the country, to Washington, DC. But there are rules: He cannot look inside the box. He cannot ask questions. He cannot tell anyone. They must leave immediately. He must leave all trackable devices behind. As these eccentric misfits hit the road, rumors spread on social media that the box is part of a carefully orchestrated terror attack intended to plunge the USA into civil war.

Very Different
Revisado: 03-25-25
I'll date myself with this comment, but the main protagonist, Abbott, was an annoyingly whiney, lazy little turd. His father was a far more sympathetic character to a GenXer who was raised to be a self sufficient, productive member of society.
Having an older teen child, I did find much of the book to be a bit of a window into the pseudo "culture " so many of these kids think is reality through their screens. I am hopeful we can, eventually, unplug these kids without it taking an apocalypse to do so.
Now, I need to go to a local rodeo, or stock show, to reassure myself that at least SOME young people still can interact, produce, and work towards goals.

A home destroyed. New graves line the grass like fresh scars. Warm sunlight dries tears from dirt-stained cheeks. Historia
Back to the Bush is the tale of a second year at Sasekile Private Game Reserve for brothers Angus and Hugh MacNaughton. Angus’s weekly journal recounts a positive beginning to the year: fastidious Hugh is in love, running his own camp and on the verge of a promotion. Angus is involved in a romantic liaison, which takes the edge off his customary cynicism, and for the first time in their adult lives, a positive fraternal bond exists between them.

Awful
Revisado: 11-21-24
The narration isn't great, but the novel is so bad, I don't think the narrator could really harm the book.
This book had a promising storyline, but that promise is annihilated less than an hour in.
The heroine is a highly educated perpetual victim - daddy only loved the sister; implicated in, but excused from, a lawsuit; growing up the heroine was awkward, sister was popular; last love dumped her and married someone else, etc etc. All this less than hour in. I already like the sister a lot better and can't understand how the heroine's former boyfriend lasted 5 years with the whiny, arrogant heroine.
If you make it through entire book, your tenacity is admirable. Life's too short to give 12 plus hours to this.

Not The Worst
Revisado: 11-21-24
The book started off interesting enough, but then took a downward turn far to late in to return it. If you're into... alternative lifestyles, you'll probably like the book better than I did. If you're more like myself, ambivalent about the existence of said alternative lifestyles, but not at all interested in the details of same sex relationships, then save your credits.

Historia
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Starts Slow, But Worth The Slog
Revisado: 10-14-24
RC Bray is, as always, the perfect narrator.
The storyline was okay-ish, but not terribly engaging...until Skippy.
The first half of the book lays down necessary context, but it drags a bit. Skippy's appearance on scene shifts the whole thing into high gear and the romp takes off.
