Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

I learned a thing or two
Revisado: 03-04-23
This book was recommended by a friend. I was not disappointed. As a science teacher and a longtime erg-er, I can attest to the veracity of much of the story. During the height of Covid, I worked on my cooking skills. I was introduced to rowing in 1959 as a high school student, then spent four years rowing at the University of Washington. I was introduced to the C2 erg in 2010, and this week as I approach 80, I will complete my first ten million meters on the erg. Rowing, the sport you love to hate or hate to love. Try the book and the erg. They will both teach you a thing or three.

For maverick LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal...because the murdered man was a fellow Vietnam "tunnel rat" who had fought side by side with him in a hellish underground war. Now Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam.

Interesting tale

Nice twists and turns often resulting in “I didn’t see that coming!” Well developed characters, and a satisfying feeling of justice served at the conclusion.

Historia
Interim sheriff Elizabeth "Bet" Rivers has always had one repeat nightmare: a shadowy figure throwing a suspicious object into her hometown lake in Collier, Washington. For the longest time, she chalked it up to an overactive imagination as a kid. Then the report arrives. In the woods of the Cascade mountain range, right in her jurisdiction, a body floats to the surface of Lake Collier. When the body is extricated and revealed, no one can identify Jane Doe. But someone must know the woman, so why aren't they coming forward?

Too much peripheral garbage
Revisado: 02-01-23
The science varied between questionable and flat wrong, from incorrect definitions of cirque and tarn to questionable juxtaposition of limestone and gold veins to an empty cave with an opening deep in the lake, the latter defying basic physics, did nothing to advance the story.
The author created so many red herrings that in the end she had to tie up a lot of loose ends in questioable knots. A lot of loose ends were just left hanging.
In the end I found myself generally disappointed. I read (listened to) this as part of a book club. I will be interested to see how others react.

Blood, gore, violence, no redeeming qualities. Unless you like a poorly contrived story line and an unending list of sophisticated weapons of war, real or imagined, spend your money on a different author. I listened to two of this series, and will waste no time on the rest.

Historia
Bill Bryson once again proves himself to be an incomparable companion as he guides us through the human body - how it functions, its remarkable ability to heal itself, and (unfortunately) the ways it can fail. Full of extraordinary facts (your body made a million red blood cells since you started reading this) and irresistible Bryson-esque anecdotes, The Body will lead you to a deeper understanding of the miracle that is life in general and you in particular. As Bill Bryson writes, "We pass our existence within this wobble of flesh and yet take it almost entirely for granted."

A real eyeopener
Revisado: 05-04-22
If you are interested in who you are and why you are, well there are a lot of answers here. As I approach 80, there are clues to reasons behind the changes that we all undergo as we age. Suddenly the idea of death makes a lot more sense.
Bryson is an exceptional writer and a very good narrator. Highly recommended.

Historia
This collection of 25 Hercule Poirot adventures is compiled from short stories written by Agatha Christie for The Sketch magazine in 1923 from March to December. In these stories, including "The Disappearance of Mr. Davenheim", "The Veiled Lady", and "The Adventure of the Egyptian Tomb", the eccentric private detective slowly and surely solves mysteries involving jealousy, revenge, and greed. These stories were well-received at the time and cemented Christie's reputation as the worthy successor to Arthur Conan Doyle.

A certain sameness to the tales
Revisado: 03-24-22
While I generally enjoyed the stories, they were somewhat formulaic. The narration was good. I was somewhat taken aback by some of the references to other racial groups that I can only assume was more acceptable in 1923 than it would be today, at least in polite society. MAGA folks would flock to it yet, I surmise.

Anyone who fancies him/herself knowledgeable about WWII and/ or aerial bombardment had best see how that knowledge stacks up against this account. Heroes and villains abound, and perhaps not where you expect them to be. A real eye-opener.

Historia
Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure.

An Uncomfortable Piece of Historythe language
Revisado: 07-02-20
The language was a reflection of the times, but given the current climate in this country, it gave pause. I should have read the book 50 years ago, but I likely took more meaning from it now. I think it could be universally read by teenagers, but under some pretty stringent instructional goals that would ask readers to take measure of themselves and of our common history. Mark Twain was a masterful humorist, and the story was definitely funny on its face. The reader was magnificent, and fior a while I will have to guard against the urge to talk like a 19th century boy growing up along the Mississippi. Well done!

Historia
Without John C. Houbolt, a mid-level engineer at NASA, Apollo 11 would never have made it to the moon. Top NASA engineers on the project, including Werner Von Braun, strongly advocated for a single, huge spacecraft to travel to the moon, land, and return to Earth. It's the scenario used in 1950s cartoons and horror movies about traveling to outer space. Houbolt had another idea: Lunar Orbit Rendezvous. LOR would link two spacecraft in orbit while the crafts were travelling at 3,600 miles an hour around the moon. His plan was ridiculed and considered unthinkable.

This is outstanding history. I grew up through this, but I knew practically none of what was happening behind the scenes. This book was worth every minute I spent with it.
