Great book - questionable narration
Revisado: 08-31-15
I enjoyed the narrative, the research and the insight tremendously, but the narration left me... annoyed. I'm all for acting out the voices, but his intonation, uptalking and tone for Mrs. Roosevelt made every direct quote sound vapid and silly. If you watch interviews of her, she frankly doesn't sound like that. It doesn't fit with the author's characterization and it loses a lot of the nuance in the way she delivers very hard messages while smiling. His impression of the President was spot on, but a lot of the other characters sounded much goofier and befuddled than I am sure those men were.

Historia
Amory Blaine, a handsome, wealthy, spoiled and snobbish young man from the Midwest, attends Princeton University and acquires a refined sense of the proper "social" values. Lacking all sense of purpose, he interests himself in literary cults, vaguely "liberal" student activities, and a series of flirtations with some rather predatory young ladies. Perhaps This Side of Paradise - F. Scott Fitzgerald's first novel - succeeds because of its vibrant quality of youthfulness.

Great book, crap reader
Revisado: 05-09-05
This guy could teach a class on how to mutilate beautiful prose with nasal, affected, slow intonation. His voice was profoundly annoying, even when sped up, and although I love the book, I stopped listening.

Historia
Just before his regiment sails off to war in the Sudan, British officer Harry Feversham quits the military. He is immediately given four white feathers as symbols of cowardice, one by each of his three best friends and one by his fiancée. To disprove this grave dishonor, Harry dons an Arabian disguise and leaves for the Sudan, where he anonymously comes to the aid of his three friends, saving each of their lives. Having proven his bravery, Harry returns to England, hoping to regain the love and respect of his fiancée.

So good!
Revisado: 05-09-05
Beautiful novel - I had heard this was so much better than the movie, but it far exceeded my expectations. Elegant, but accessible literature. The characters are by far more of the focus than the war. Especially good as an audiobook, which is helped by the great reader.
