Historia
Dalton Greaves is a hero. He’s one of humankind’s first representatives to Unity, a pan-species confederation working to bring all sentient life into a single benevolent brotherhood. That’s what they told him, anyway. The only actual members of Unity that he’s ever met are Boreau, a giant snail who seems more interested in plunder than spreading love and harmony, and Boreau’s human sidekick, Neera, who Dalton strongly suspects roped him into this gig so that she wouldn’t become the next one of Boreau’s crew to get eaten by locals while prospecting.

Historia
The Hygrometric Dehabitation Region, or the "Zone," is a growing band of rainforest on the equator, where the heat and humidity make it impossible for warm-blooded animals to survive. A human being without protection in the Zone is dead in minutes. Twenty years ago, Marks went into the rainforest with a group of researchers led by Doctor Elaine Fell, to study the extraordinary climate and see if it could be used in agriculture. The only thing she learned was that the Zone was no place for people. There were deaths, and the program was cut short. Now, they're sending her back in.

Chilling, interesting, technical
Revisado: 12-05-24
Of greater interest to me because I have several cold-blooded pets.
Great story, great ideas here. Narration really spot on too.
I have a complaint, but it’s a bit of a spoiler; here it is:
I’m not sure how, in the end, the chief green person was not all slo-mo like the other green people. I feel like she shoulda been slo-mo cuz there was no temp diff in her room compared to outside her room, neh?

Historia
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

Also, free for Audible subscribers, thanks!
When you see that the author is John Scalzi, you know it’s gonna be fun. You know you’re gonna be able to escape, even if it is just a cute short story. Very nice.

Narration even-keeled & matter-of-fact
Revisado: 05-07-24
Story has enough details to keep me interested. Narrator treats all the details evenly, so it’s easy to forget him and to be immersed in the story, but not too emotionally captured by it. Just the right balance for me: i listen while driving. Come to think of it, the narrator reminds of a WW2 newsreel announcer. I only gave four stars for the story because I object to how one female character started strong but then devolved unrealistically into a classic housewifey role.

full of discovery, wonder, newness
Revisado: 01-22-24
The layers of the Jovian atmosphere are presented as a complex environment with a complex ecology. The sense of awe and discovery pervades the story. I LOVED this book and as my kid would say, I VERY RECOMMEND it. There is a posthumous sequel written by others, and I tried that too, but I do not recommend the sequel (it was very boring, full of the speculative human politics of the future, rather than any discovery or wonder or even any awe at all).

On the edge of the galaxy, a diplomatic mission to an alien planet takes a turn when the Legionnaires, an elite special fighting force, find themselves ambushed and stranded behind enemy lines. They struggle to survive under siege, waiting on a rescue that might never come. It is a fun story, but too similar to Star Wars
Revisado: 10-21-23
I had fun listening to it mostly because of the narrator’s performance. The story was good fun, but the second book in this double feature was far too similar to Star Wars. I like science fiction because weird ideas can come out, or strange combinations that I wouldn’t have imagined by myself; the second book in this series just uses the same weird ideas that Star Wars used so I was a little bit disappointed. I’m glad to have listen to the story, because it was fun, but I’m not going to be looking to continue the series.

Historia
In the 25th century, humans have conquered space. The advent of faster-than-light travel has opened up hundreds of habitable planets for colonization, and humans have exploited the virtually limitless space and resources for hundreds of years with impunity. So complacent have they become with the overabundance that armed conflict is a thing of the past, and their machines of war are obsolete and decrepit. What would happen if they were suddenly threatened by a terrifying new enemy?

I like the techie details
Revisado: 10-10-23
I like the care towards details
I like the lack of “subspace” and “ansible” instant comm
I like the plot and characters, even though they are little a bit canned or off-the-shelf.
I don’t like how there seem to be only two women in a crew of over 100

Historia
The critically acclaimed author of The Radleys shares a clever, heartwarming, and darkly insightful novel about an alien who comes to Earth to save humans from themselves. When an extraterrestrial visitor arrives on Earth, his first impressions of the human species are less than positive. But as time goes on, he starts to realize there may be more to this weird species than he has been led to believe. Eventually, the narrator sees hope and redemption in the humans' imperfections and begins to question the very mission that brought him there.

When unforeseen circumstances during an innovative—and unsanctioned—commercial asteroid-mining mission leave two crew members stranded, those who make it back must engineer a rescue, all while navigating a shifting web of global political alliances and renewed Cold War tensions. With Earth governments consumed by the ravages of climate change and unable to take the risks necessary to make rapid progress in space, the crew must build their own next-gen spacecraft capable of mounting a rescue in time for the asteroid's next swing by Earth.

Great story, great technical details, excellent read aloud
Revisado: 03-17-23
The narrator on this did a great job with the different accents. I was so surprised by the quality of the accents. I really like the technical details, you know the high temperature, superconducting tape, and the orbital mechanics, and the Blockchain details, which I have never learned before, stuff like that. I listened at 1.5 speed you know, it is kind of surprising that the narrator was unable to pronounce Korean words and Russian words although he really did Korean accent, and Russian accent credibly in English . so impressed.
