Historia
The Counterlife is about people enacting their dreams of renewal and escape, some of them going so far as to risk their lives to alter seemingly irreversible destinies. Wherever they may find themselves, the characters of The Counterlife are tempted unceasingly by the prospect of an alternative existence that can reverse their fate. Illuminating these lives in transition and guiding us through the book's evocative landscapes, familiar and foreign, is the mind of the novelist Nathan Zuckerman.

thought-provoking and full of surprises
Revisado: 04-01-25
The novel is a lot of fun because of the humor and the twists and turns the reader is put through. I don't recall asking so often in a book, okay, what is going on NOW?

John le Carré, the legendary author of sophisticated spy thrillers, is at the top of his game in this classic novel of a world in chaos. With the Cold War over, a new era of espionage has begun. In the power vacuum left by the Soviet Union, arms dealers and drug smugglers have risen to immense influence and wealth. The sinister master of them all is Richard Onslow Roper, the charming, ruthless Englishman whose operation seems untouchable.

Memorable and pleasing once you get going
Revisado: 06-28-24
listening to a le Carre book requires restarts. this is artful writing and often relies on dialogue. this means it's easy to forget who's talking and who they are. this isn't a minus, but it's reality for the average Joe. so, I got through it eventually and liked it very much. many scenes are stuck in my mind and I liked very much the main character. a good villain, too. The reading was satisfactory but perhaps not as pleasing as I would like.

Historia
No Orchids for Miss Blandish was crime author James Hadley Chase’s first novel, and an experiment in adapting American hard-boiled crime fiction by a British author. Inspired by James Cain and The Postman Always Rings Twice, it worked so well that it launched the former salesman’s writing career. He went on to write over eighty novels sold worldwide with a huge American, Asian and European following.

A gripping story, perfectly read.
Revisado: 03-03-21
Similar in style to an Elmore Leonard novel, this is a crisply written noir story. The reader captures the right spirit of the work.

This is a very well-read collection of excerpts, children's rhymes and the type of verse George Orwell called good bad poems. All are brief. None too deep.

Historia
Germany, 1660: When a dying boy is pulled from the river with a mark crudely tattooed on his shoulder, hangman Jakob Kuisl is called upon to investigate whether witchcraft is at play in his small Bavarian town. Whispers and dark memories of witch trials and the women burned at the stake just seventy years earlier still haunt the streets of Schongau.

Great concept, average execution
Revisado: 04-28-19
There are interesting bits about the work of seventeenth-century executioners. These sections are well written. The fictional elements are less successful. Cliche and flat writing abound. Gardner's performance, as always, good.

Historia
Andrew Roberts' Napoleon is the first one-volume biography to take advantage of the recent publication of Napoleon's thirty-three thousand letters, which radically transform our understanding of his character and motivation. At last we see him as he was: protean multitasker, decisive, surprisingly willing to forgive his enemies and his errant wife Josephine.

Some moral questions
Revisado: 02-23-18
The reader was creative and professional, and the book held my interest. The prose is clear enough. Keeping track of the many French names, and where the battles were being fought proved difficult. I was disappointed with the epilogue which consisted of a list of who died when. What was needed was a summing up. How many casualties were there in the Napoleonic Wars? Were they inevitable? What were the benefits Napoleon brought to mankind? these points were hit upon throughout the book, but needed to be summarized.

strange omissions
Revisado: 10-08-17
This volume was least diverting of the lot but was not devoid of interest. The irony of Poland, whose invasion by Germany started the war losing its freedom anyway, had been lost on me. The absence of certain subjects in this and earlier volumes puzzled me. Operation Market Garden is one example. And how do you abridge the Holocaust?

good reporting

I learned much, despite issues with the writer's style. Overlook the cliches, the anthropomorphisms, the vapid asides and the general flatness of the writing and you will enjoy this book.

Historia
Sons and Lovers, D. H. Lawrence's first major novel, was also the first in the English language to explore ordinary working-class life from the inside. No writer before or since has written so well about the intimacies enforced by a tightly knit mining community and by a family where feelings are never hidden for long. When the marriage between Walter Morel and his sensitive, high-minded wife begins to break down, the bitterness of their frustration seeps into their children's lives.
