Historia
The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

Did not keep my interest.

Liked the setting, but characters did not stick with me. I prefer appealing character driven plots.

Historia
The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers.
Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures.
Together again in the house they grew up in, the Waverley sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy - if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom - or with each other.

Not what I expected

I like gardening and magical fiction, less fond of romances. This had enuf of the former to get me to the end after several tries. I probably won't read more of the series, tho. Good reader!

The Plover soars as a rollicking, frolicking, meaningful sea story.

What a treat to discover Brian Doyle's stories did not end on the last page of Mink River! Declan continues to show us ways to face challenges of life and death among sea birds, friends and foes as his solitary journey accumulates a ship full of fascinating characters.
