Detective Sergeant Chris Waters got the call at 05.29 that July morning. This is it, said DCI Reeve, you'll be first there, it's all yours, you're the crime scene manager. Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder. As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision.

Thrilled that the series isn't over!
Revisado: 10-25-19
I enjoyed this book tremendously. I thought the DC series ended after the last book and was so happy to see it hadn't.
SPOILER ALERT
I was giddy to learn, about 1/3 of the way through the book, that DC is alive and well. It was like an old friend came home. I loved the story from start to finish. The character development is great from book to book. Jackson does an A+ job narrating. The character voices are SO clearly defined. I wish he would give lessons to other narrators in training. The only issue I had -- and I hate to admit that I had one -- was that, to me, it was obvious how the DNA got on the initial suspect. I guessed it almost right away. Knowing how good the detectives are, it doesn't make sense that they didn't figure it out as quickly as I did. Especially DC.

Historia
When eight-year-old Daisy Mason vanishes from her family’s Oxford home during a costume party, Detective Inspector Adam Fawley knows that nine times out of ten, the offender is someone close to home. And Daisy’s family is certainly strange—her mother is obsessed with keeping up appearances, while her father is cold and defensive under questioning. And then there’s Daisy’s little brother, so withdrawn and uncommunicative . . .

Kept me interested the whole way through
Revisado: 08-15-19
I really enjoyed this book. The story was great. There were lots of unexpected twists and turns. Right from the beginning I was hooked. I loved that there were multiple narrators and that they spoke the lines without saying "he said.. she said." The main narrator in particular was great. I have to say one negative thing, however - something another reviewer noted. There was WAY TOO much social media. They literally spoke the Tweets word for word, punctuation and all, complete with "hashtag, underscore..." And it went on and on. It was probably fine for the written book, but excruciating to have to listen to, and it added nothing to the story.

Recovering on a remote Scottish island, his peace doesn’t last long. He is pulled in to a murder inquiry by the overstretched local police. A newcomer, popular with the islanders, has died in perplexing circumstances. The community's reactions are complicated and fragile. It’s good to be back on the job. And when Simon returns to Lafferton, an arsonist is on the rampage and a woman whose daughter disappeared some years before is haunting the police station seeking closure. She will not let it rest, and Simon is called in to do a cold-case review.

Not the best in the series
Revisado: 05-09-19
I love this series and was eagerly anticipating this release. I was disappointed in it, however. I agree with another reviewer. The story lines didn't really go together, especially the murder on the island. There was nothing exciting or surprising, and the ending was a bit flat. Steven Pacey was wonderful, as always. I won't give up though. I love the rest of the series too much for that.

Enjoyed it very much, you can't be in a hurry
Revisado: 12-05-18
I really enjoyed this book. The narrator was A+. He did a great job. He really brought out the personalities of all the characters. This is a long listen and I think you need patience. There is an initial storyline that kind of ends and then goes into a new one, leaving you wondering why the first one was necessary. But it's all relevant. You don't know the complete picture until the very end -- even if you think you know what's what, there's more to know. Really good.

Great narrator, good story, a few irritations
Revisado: 10-22-18
I really liked this book. The narrator was great and the story kept me interested. A few things, though, really bugged me. The author tends to over describe things, even the most mundane, "the gray string on his shirt glistened like a drop of water on a placid lake." I made that up, but it's pretty accurate. At one point, when the main character is walking down a path, it took a solid 10 minutes for her to get where she was going because of all the over-the-top descriptions and the narration of every single tiny thought in her head as she got there.
Another thing that irked me was the amount of times the name "Sarah Jane" was said. Honestly, if it were a drinking game and you had to drink whenever they said the name, everyone would be passed out after chapter 2.
Finally, the excessive and totally unnecessary detail about her boxing got me irritated. It's how I feel when someone at work tells me about their workout. Who cares? It's braggy. But, in spite of all that, I did enjoy the book.

Historia
The cathedral town of Lafferton seems idyllic, but in many ways it is just like any other place. As part of the same rapidly changing world, it shares the same hopes and fears, and the same kinds of crime, as any number of towns up and down the land. When one day DC Simon Serrailler is called in by Lafferton's new Chief Constable, Kieron Bright, he is met by four plainclothes officers. He is asked to take the lead role in a complex, potentially dangerous undercover operation and must leave town immediately.

Revisado: 08-14-18
I absolutely loved every book in this series, and I loved all the characters, even the ones I hated! I can't wait for the next one. (I just re-listened to this last one.) I've listened to over a hundred audio books and Steven Pacey is top of the list. Fantastic. He set the bar pretty high for all other narrators.

Shallow and full of cliches
Revisado: 06-14-18
I love books that have rich characters and interesting plots, with narrators who seamlessly go from one character to the other in an unforced way and you always know who's speaking. This is not one of those stories. I just read the DC Smith series by Peter Grainger, and that blows this away.

When a worker goes missing from a North Sea gas platform, there seem to be just two possible explanations - it was a tragic accident or a suicide. It does not take Smith and his detectives long, however, to discover that James Bell led a double life back onshore in Kings Lake, a life complicated enough to make him at least one dangerous enemy. Before the case can be unraveled, Smith must get a new team working together.

I really loved this book
Revisado: 03-04-18
The narrator really hit the nail on the head. The story was so enjoyable. I laughed a million times. It wasn't belly-laugh type laughs, but quiet, cover your mouth laughs. The only negative thing was that he did a really bad American accent. But I didn't really care.
