Historia
After the old gods warred and drove themselves to extinction, the cataclysm of their fall shattered the land of Vigrio. Now, power-hungry jarls carve out petty kingdoms, and monsters stalk the shadow-haunted woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power, promising fame, and fortune for those brave - or desperate - enough to seek them out. As whispers of war echo over the plains and across the fjords, fate follows the footsteps of three people. All three will shape the fate of the world, as it once more teeters on the edge of chaos.

good, but not exceptional
Revisado: 01-07-25
There is little to dislike in this book, but at the same time not enough to love. The descriptions are thorough, and evocative, though a bit repetive(constant use of a particular form, and overuse of certain words). The characters are well thought out, logistics, time, and motivations are well considered using a combination of show don't tell approach, with limited naration by way of the characters thoughts. Though there is little significant diversity between said characters save their backstories, as they tend to hold similar values, and a similar worldview. A worldview that can be described as simplistic, hindging on oaths, family, and honor. This leads to the plot being simplistic, similar to the old Nordic tales it clearly draws inspiration from. However this trend is bucked enough to be clever, making the plot interesting through careful consideration and good writing, but not enough make it exceptional.
I very much recommend this book, it is unique, and worth reading. But I think a few notable authors such as Joe Abercrombie, George RR Martin, and Glen Cook are better within the grim dark fantasy genre overall.

This book is like a fanfiction of itself
Revisado: 11-28-24
In excellent literature the world is infinite. In merely good literature the reader feels as if they are looking through a keyhole into a vast world. In bad literature there is nothing more than what is on the page. Which is sadly the case for this book.
The plot is fairly throwaway, used merely as an engine for the development of 2 main characters. Which would be fine if said development was in any way good. One coming to terms with past failings, while the other their true nature, and place within the universe. Noble concepts, but hamhandely done, evinced by the clear effort to force an emotional reaction, constantly telling you how to feel. I would argue show don't tell applies here.
The side characters are strictly there for comic relief, and to drive main character development. They lack substance, and are effectively stereotypes. Every character should have wants, fears, and quirks, but above all they should feel real.
The book is a veritable hack and slash that tries way to hard to be gritty, but without having any true understanding of the notion.
On the upside however the aliens were quite well done. They felt weird and complex in the way such well written characters should, though their society did lack depth. Additionally the voice acting is well done, if a little over the top.
Sadly this sort of book appears to be in high demand, there to pander to everyone, but offend no one.

fresh air, heart

this book doesn't follow standard tropes. It may be dark, but it doesn't feel that way. the characters just feel human. Don't expect a lot of world building either.
p. s. the sequel is worth waiting for.

I feel like cam finally truly hit his stride with this one. Moreover the incredible intricacy of the universe amazed me yet again. I didn't think it was possible for there to be yet more backstory to far flung genabackis, but yet there it was seamless as always.

though you may see through the mists of time and travel through gates to other worlds. be aware nothing is as it is, but the walls will declare your steps. the eyes of another will urge your passage and the touch of the wind will hold your breath. if all is to go as you will it then then there should be no other path. the new sun rises though it has been there always.
