Historia
Emery Thompson hates Calvin Chamberlain. From the way he acts like he’s better than everyone to the way he moves through the world thinking his podcast is the cream of the crop, every little thing about the man gets to him. Even that dashing, oh-so-confident smile. He’d rather be caught dead than be around the man any longer than necessary—or admit that last part out loud.

He expects to find a disgraceful array of sordid bookshops. He doesn't expect one of them to be run by the long-lost friend whose disappearance and presumed death he's been mourning for 13 years. Gil Lawless became a Holywell Street bookseller for his own reasons, and he's damned if he's going to apologize or listen to moralizing from anyone.

Captivating Characters. Predictable Plot.
Revisado: 04-24-19
Definitely don't seek out this story for eroticism or mystery. I feel like many reviews over-hype those two features. There's one terse & tepid scene of explicit "romance (not)" but lots of references to the sexuality & even depravity of the setting (told through the eyes of someone who is not about that life.)
I love this book because subversive stories tickle my fancy, but I could easily see this book giving some people the vapors.
The main characters are strong and charismatic. I hung on the word of both princes. They shine throughout the story and play off of each other well.
The performance lacks nothing. Great voice. Great acting. Though the voices for different characters don't vary much, I was never confused about who was talking because the actor switched delivery styles. Hard to explain, but effective. I'm a fan.

Historia
Lord Courtenay has been called many things and has never much cared. But after the publication of a salacious novel supposedly based on his exploits, he finds himself shunned from society. Unable to see his nephew, he is willing to do anything to improve his reputation, even if that means spending time with the most proper man in London. Julian Medlock has spent years becoming the epitome of correct behavior. As far as he cares, if Courtenay finds himself in hot water, it's his own fault for behaving so badly - and being so blasted irresistible.

I relate far too much to both characters. Especially Julian because I've had a reoccurring illness since childhood. If you've got an invisible illness, this story will make you feel worthy of love and care. 💖
The narrator has a charming voice but started out with a few problems modulating their voice for different characters. Don't let that discourage you from listening. They quickly improved and finished strong!

Inconsistent voice acting
Revisado: 09-22-16
The constant switching between character voices for narrated bits was confusing. Sometimes it would take me a whole passage to realize a character hadn't been speaking out loud. Also, the bits w the villain were just too off-putting. I was already having trouble getting into the romantic scenes due to awkward wording & then having the surgeon go into detail about his intentions toward a young child just ruined the rest of this, for me.

Awkward Narration. Worth it!
Revisado: 07-04-16
I believe this is the very first time I've been turned off by a narrator's performance & production quality but felt that the story truly made up for the struggle.
The first person narration actually helps in accepting the voice. after all, the main character is painfully awkward, himself.
About halfway through the book, pauses in the recording become obvious & distracting. The narrator struggles with varying his voice for multiple characters. He's not great with accents. Yet, Percival is an endearing character & imagining it is him making these mistakes somehow improves the storytelling.
Also, bravo on not using too many euphemisms. Graphic romantic scenes are far more interesting.
Great foreshadowing & use of the setting to build a convincing mystery.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Definitely! Fans of Jane Austen will appreciate the pacing of this book and the witty ways the characters interact.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I don't want to spoil it, but it's one of the few romance novels I've read where the ending was worth the wait!
