Strange characters and plot
Revisado: 02-26-25
I had hoped to be uplifted but ended up confused and irritated. Many quirks of the characters some may say were colorful but I found off-putting. I know enough about the wilderness to know this story stretched reality. I finally got used to the main characters narration but it took a while. I am not glad to have read this.

Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Detailed and dramatic daily life
Revisado: 02-19-25
I was engaged from the start. Although I thought at first the main character was a bit too bold and a feminist. But listening to the authors notes I am impressed with the authenticity and details.

Hopeful yet often unrealistic

Liked the idea of a journey to find oneself through service. Didn’t care for the extreme contrast between the trip benefactor, clueless helpers and the needs of the people they were to serve. The narrator’s voice wasn’t my favorite but probably was a good representation of the lead character.

Historia
When Haze Evans first appeared in the small-town newspaper, she earned fans by writing a story about her bachelor uncle who brought a Queen of the Rodeo to Thanksgiving dinner. Now, 50 years later, when the beloved columnist suffers a massive stroke and falls into a coma, publisher Susan McGrath fills the void (temporarily, she hopes) with Haze's past columns, along with the occasional reprinted responses from readers. Most letters were favorable, although Haze did have her trolls; one Joseph Snell in particular dubbed her "liberal" ideas the "chronicles of a radical hag."

Fell in love with the characters
Revisado: 01-20-25
We chose this for our church’s book club in Jan. A great way to reflect on our lives and experiences. Granted the main character is left leaning but she promotes understanding and acceptance. The author did an outstanding job of narration. I look forward to reading more by her. If you want a discussion- choose this book.

Former foreign correspondent Lola Wicks is getting a little bored in Magpie, Montana, where she landed at a small local newspaper after being downsized from her job in Kabul. Then Judith Calf Looking, a local Blackfeet Indian girl missing for several months, turns up dead in a snowbank with a mysterious brand on her forearm. The sheriff - whose romantic relationship with Lola provides Magpie with its most delicious gossip in years - thinks Judith probably froze to death while hitchhiking back to the reservation from wherever she'd been.

Gwen has written more interesting books. This one often was too predictable. I appreciate her focus on Man Camps, missing women and the dangers to community of this oil boom. I also like her strong female characters.

Mostly sad and slowly unfolding
Revisado: 10-27-24
The premise and dual time lines were fine. The female narrator and her descriptions seemed tediously drawn out. Like there was a point but then you had to pause for every detail of the room. I had to speed up the book because she annoyed me. I am not sure the characters actions and their rationales made sense to me.

Amazing-gripping-insightful
Revisado: 07-15-24
The story and narrator grabbed me from the beginning. I was hesitant to try this book because I was worried it would be dense or boring. That thought is far from the reality. It was funny, sad, suspenseful and touching. I will certainly recommend it !

Touching and real
Revisado: 05-08-24
I liked the author’s honesty. Coming from an alcoholic family myself, I found her description of her home to be spot on and familiar. Glad there was a happy ending.8
The only thing confusing was the introduction of the boy reading the Bible to his sick relative. Who introduced him to religion? I didn’t care for the narrator but she did a fine job.

Historia
Using her expertise in ancient Israelite society and economy as well as in biblical theology, Richter walks listeners through passages familiar and not-so-familiar, showing how significant environmental theology is in the Bible's witness. She then calls Christians to apply that message to today's environmental concerns. Richter is a master Bible scholar. Each chapter in this timely book draws out a biblical mandate about care for the land, for domestic and wild animals, for people at the margins, and more. She is also a master storyteller.

Scattershot with some insights
Revisado: 04-21-24
I liked the idea of it but found the points granular and a bit circular. Wish she could have made more straightforward points as she did in the conclusion.
