Historia
Indonesia is by far the largest nation in Southeast Asia and has the fourth-largest population in the world after the United States. Indonesian history and culture are especially relevant today as the island nation is an emerging power in the region with a dynamic new leader. It is a land of incredible diversity and unending paradoxes that has a long and rich history stretching back a thousand years and more.

A much-needed, accessible history of Indonesia
Revisado: 05-04-22
Indonesia is the fourth-largest country in the world by population and has a fascinating history. Its importance will continue to grow on the world stage. But it's hard to find an accessible, non-academic history of the country. This book addresses this problem with a very listenable narrative that does not require a background in Southeast Asian history. If you are interested in Indonesian history from prehistory to the present, this book is a great place to start. The writing and narration are smooth and do not demand concentration from the listener. The book generally sticks to facts and avoids interpretation. You won't find much here on topics like the injustices of colonialism or speculation about foreign involvement in the 1965 coup. But the book does provide a solid grounding in Indonesian history that will be useful as you explore other sources on the country.

Historia
This illuminating study explores the ways in which the shattering defeat of the Japanese in World War II, followed by over six years of American military occupation, affected every level of Japanese society. The author describes the countless ways in which the Japanese met the challenge of "starting over", from top-level manipulations concerning the fate of Emperor Hirohito to the hopes, fears, and activities of ordinary men and women in every walk of life.

Fascinating history weakened by poor narration
Revisado: 04-15-21
In college I took a class in post-war Japanese literature, so I went into this book with some knowledge of the immediate post-war years. The author does a great job detailing the years after the war and includes stories of the hardships suffered by everyday people in Japan. Many of these stories are pulled from Japanese newspapers of the era. The book is very approachable and not academic like some histories of the era. But the narration is awkward and robotic and the narrator seems disinterested in the topic. This book deserves a re-do with a narrator that cares about the subject matter. If you like Japanese comics and movies, I recommend this audio book to better understand the experiences and trauma that shaped Japanese popular culture after the war. But be prepared to be occasionally frustrated with the narration.
