Historia
The year is 1327. Franciscans in a wealthy Italian abbey are suspected of heresy, and Brother William of Baskerville arrives to investigate. But his delicate mission is suddenly overshadowed by seven bizarre deaths that take place in seven days and nights of apocalyptic terror. Brother William turns detective, and a uniquely deft one at that. His tools are the logic of Aristotle, the theology of Aquinas, the empirical insights of Roger Bacon-- all sharpened to a glistening edge by his wry humor and ferocious curiosity.

A Big Hit in the ‘80s
Revisado: 05-15-19
At first I was engrossed by the rich language, the 14th century history of the Church under Pope John of Avignon, but as the plot unwound, the 7 days of its telling felt like 7 weeks, at least, and I said goodbye without learning if there was even a murderer afoot. Eco must have used every word in every dictionary in this work.

This was the first Alafair. Burke novel I’d read, and I’ll certainly follow it with others. Good writing, believable and interesting characters, and the level of suspense kept me listening when I should have gone to sleep.

Historia
People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semifinals, and they actually have a shot at winning.

Beartown was so much more than I expected. Hockey was the ground for this powerful story of love in all its aspects, of truth, and of men. So well-plotted with vivid but muted characters. Excellent all around.

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

Speak, O Memory
Revisado: 03-16-19
The title, a quote from a Seamus Heaney poem, gains more weight and significance as the book progresses. I’ve always been an IRA sympathizer from a great distance, and I still side with the Republican desire to be free from England, but it is impossible after finishing this to condone the actions of either side during the long and terrible religious war in Ireland. The book is powerful in its scope, commitment to the truth, and compassion for all those who still suffer in silence.

Revisado: 01-09-19
I found the first two books in this series thrilling, but The Last Temptation let me down in almost every way. Too many characters, too little action, and too short to be a worthwhile buy.

Historia
Profoundly deaf since early childhood, Caleb has always lived on the outside - watching and picking up tell-tale signs people hide in a smile, a cough or a kiss. When a childhood friend is murdered, a sense of guilt and a determination to prove his own innocence sends Caleb on a hunt for the killer. But he can’t do it alone....

Irksome convo
Revisado: 12-30-18
I became increasingly bothered by the efforts of the deaf protagonist to understand and be understood by others. The repetition made for choppy flow, slowed the story, and caused me to be annoyed with, not sympathetic to, the main character. The author had an interesting idea, but I think it is difficult to execute well. Don’t recommend.

Historia
On a steamy August evening, after an exhausting day in the courtroom, Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Cooper joins her longtime pals and partners-in-investigation, NYPD detectives Mike Chapman and Mercer Wallace, at a somber crime site. In her ten years as a sex crimes prosecutor, Alex has seen many victims, but few more poignant than today's, pulled from the water with her hands and feet obscenely tied to a ladder. Sleep comes uneasily after such a vision, but the knowledge that monsters walk the city's streets, preying on the innocent, motivates Alex and her colleagues with their sometimes heartbreaking work. Perhaps this time they will be lucky. A "cold hit" will match DNA from the crime scene with a suspect's DNA profile in the police database. Or is there a more sinister kind of "cold hit" that claimed the victims life in this case? Who was she? Her elegant clothes and manicured nails suggest affluent connections, but just how well connected suprises even Alex. Illuminating and inspiring, Cold Hit takes us from the paint-chipped offices of cops and D.A.s to the elegant restaurants of Alex's privileged Upper East Side life. The contrast is stunning, but it's all part of the extraordinary world that author Linda Fairstein has brought so vividly to life in this magnificent novel of suspense.

I’m annoyed that I bought this. Way too short for the $$, and Janney doesn’t compare to the narrator earlier titles. Boring story to boot. Very disappointed.

Belfast, 1985. Amid the Troubles, Detective Sean Duffy, a Catholic cop in the Protestant Royal Ulster Constabulary, struggles with burnout as he investigates a brutal double murder and suicide. Did Michael Kelly really shoot his parents at point-blank range and then jump off a nearby cliff? A suicide note points to this conclusion, but Duffy suspects even more sinister circumstances.

Historia
In The Keeper of Lost Causes, Jussi Adler-Olsen introduced Detective Carl Mørck, a deeply flawed, brilliant detective newly assigned to run Department Q, the home of Copenhagen’s coldest cases. The result wasn’t what Mørck - or readers - expected, but by the opening of Adler-Olsen’s shocking, fast-paced follow-up, Mørck is satisfied with the notion of picking up long-cold leads. So he’s naturally intrigued when a closed case lands on his desk: A brother and sister were brutally murdered two decades earlier....

Something missing
Revisado: 12-20-15
I was immediately disappointed when I didn't hear Eric Davies reading this second in Adler-Olsen's Q series. Whatever his background, Davies was perfect! I also missed the interplay between the protagonist and Assad, his under-appreciated right-hand man. Not sure if I'll pursue this series.
