My partner is taking an actual class on the history of mathematics. The Greeks get way too much credit. I couldn't listen to this because I got too angry.

Good performance though. he's got a good voice and if you just want to listen to Greek mathematics go for it.

What could John E. Sarno, M.D. have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I feel his decision to write this book is unethical. He frequently says that his assertions are "controversial." What is really meant is that they are disproved by science, in many cases. He clearly has grabbed on to this one idea (that some physical symptoms can be caused by repressed emotion) and then haphazardly educated himself on Freud (super terrible person, much disproved) and then sees everything through this lens of "everything is caused by repressed emotion." Yes, modern humans repress emotions too much. But... There are many factors.... And his using his MD to give validity to what he's saying when he has no formal training in psychology is unethical. Many things he has to say about psychology are untrue and are obviously him just projecting his own abnormalities upon all humans to help him feel more normal and OK. I hate it when authors have such obvious defense mechanisms which cause them to skew their views...

Touch of Frost Audiolibro Por Jennifer Estep arte de portada

What disappointed you about Touch of Frost?

So much slut shaming. Especially given that this is written by impressionable female teens. Reinforcing all this purity myth culture which is used to oppress women and traumatize girls coming into their womenhood with feelings that their (very normal and healthy) sexual urges make them "sluts" and "whores." Also she uses the word "bitch" (A classic word of female oppression which creates this archetype which allows women's experiences to be invalidated and dismissed out of hand as simply "bitching" or being a "crazy bitch," etc.)

What could Jennifer Estep have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Jennifer Estep should read "The Purity Myth" and "Female Chauvinist Pigs." And also maybe "Ethical Slut." Get some feminist backbone. Etc.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The performance was not bad.

Would you listen to Monster in My Closet again? Why?

Probably will while falling asleep eventually, though I like Neil Gaiman's readings much better for falling asleep to. The narration isn't the best, but then again, american accents bother me..

Who was your favorite character and why?

Morice. He is a closet monster. I love this.

Did Rebecca Gibel do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes. They each had their own voice, though two of the male characters' voices blurred a bit.

Disagreeing with bad ratings

Any additional comments?

So I'm giving it 5 stars because I want to offset the poor ratings made by people who are ignorant and/or bigoted.
The first factual inaccuracy in bad reviews I'd like to rail against is the idea that the blood and gore of war shown in this book was over-the-top, unrealistic, or unbelievable. I'm sure these comments are from Americans who are willfully ignorant of the history of the United States and current events internationally.
The second reason this book has gotten bad reviews with which I disagree is the complaint that about a third of it is gay porno. In reality, the erotic scenes are substantially less explicit than any actual porn. Most of the "gay" scenes are just the love story between Jaz and his partner. I think most people who make this complaint are just homophobes who hate that they find themselves getting turned on by the somewhat erotic love story between two men.

All this said, I almost stopped listening because the war violence was too believable and explicit for me and was thus too triggering (as a survivor of similar violence myself).
I did finish reading and got super pissed off at the ending. It took what could have been (and was shaping up to be) a great poly love story and turned it into just another poly tragedy. It is just one more in a long string of love stories in which the relationship is a form that is not socially accepted, and is thus punished in the end by the author in the form of great tragedy befalling the protagonists. (Just like all the interracial love stories in the past and gay love stories of the past ending in tragedy when these were more unacceptable relationship forms.) I'm so pissed off about this that I plan to return this to get Coraline in order to try to take my mind off how pissed off at the author I am for this.

The narration is great, and the writing style is also great. Very talented writer in spinning prose which is detailed in all the right ways.
