Live this story
Revisado: 08-18-21
(I was gifted a copy of this book and I have chosen to leave my honest review.)
This was my second time reading this book. But, the first time listening to it on audio.
First, let me talk about the audio. This narrator is really, really good. Her voice is so soothing, and her accents are perfect, and her male/female tones are perfect. And I think that the author hit it out of the park when she chose this narrator.
As far as the story, I have reviewed this here before but then I had that slight (massive) mishap where all of my reviews were deleted. So let me reiterate.
I enjoyed this book even more the second time around. I found the world building in this story to be amazing. The author was able to create these societies, this world, and make it absolutely believable. And while the terminology takes a minute to get used to it ends up flowing really well.
Trigger warning: Love triangle. 😆 Okay, it’s not really a trigger but, oh my goodness. I can’t cope. I have thoughts, and I have feelings, and I have opinions. And I know, I just know the author is going to rip my heart out. I know my ship is going to sink. But, honestly that is one of the things that is so great about this book. The level of emotional response it draws from me. Was I driving down the road yelling at the author? Maybe. Why? You’ll have to read and find out.

I discover that I have abilities I couldn’t have even dreamed of, if I’d stayed in California. But, if I’m to survive, I might have to embrace dark magic.

Creepy, Creepy Fun

4.5
So much creepy fun!
I love these characters. Callie, well, I wouldn’t say she’s the brightest bulb in the box but I’m enjoying following her story.
Samuel! I love him! Well, I hate him. But I love to hate him. Seriously, a villain I really enjoyed. So dark. He gave me the creeps and I loved it. I want more villains like him.
The rest of the cast of characters are all well developed and interesting in their own ways. It’s been a while since I read a book that I felt like I couldn’t get enough of it. I’m on the edge of my seat for book three. How do I get on Ms. Loth’s ARC team???!???

I really enjoyed this as an audiobook. The narrator is very good. I recommend it either in print or in audio.

Mom sent me all the way across the country to the Louisiana bayou to join the circus and help my uncle for the summer. Except, there is something not quite right on this swampy cursed island, and after having my fortune told, I can’t leave. I try to escape, but Benny, an all too charming ghost gangster, tries to kill me by feeding me to a tiger. Thankfully, I’m rescued by Samuel, the incredibly hot ringmaster who can’t be a day over 20. Can he?

Fun and creepy! It’s like RL Stine meets Cirque Du Freak meets the Louisiana bayou. I really enjoyed this one and it’s a quick and easy read.
I was pulled in immediately. The writing is descriptive enough that I could picture what was going on. The characters are each very unique to themselves. I found the main character a little annoying. But not in a bad way, more like in a she’s human kind of away.
The narration was great. And I am on my way to Amazon right now to find book two!

So, I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook and I’m leaving an honest review.
What a fun ride! Dystopian but also sci-fi but also fantasy but also (teen) romance. If any of these things appeal to you this might be a book for you. I got Grishaverse vibes and mockingjay vibes. Also some wicked cool fantasy vibes that I won’t compare here because that would just spoil the surprise. (And it was a surprise I wasn’t expecting but really loved.) There were well developed characters and a well thought out world. The magic system was quite unique. Though it did cause me to cough here and there. (and then maaaaybe gag. Hahaha.) There was a satisfying ending, though it left just enough of a hook to make you want to come back for part two! (September 1, 2020!)
This book was narrated by the author and she did a superb job!

Quite Fantastical - In a good way
Revisado: 01-12-20
I enjoyed this book. I found it really well written for a debut novel. The descriptions were rich and not shallow. The story was engaging. I was reading, minding my own business, and suddenly it was much more fantasy than I had expected but Not in a bad way! The world is well imagined and described. And I did fall a bit for a couple characters. I enjoyed Darius but I feel I may harbor secret love for Sebastian.
My only complaint about this book would be that there is a little bit of head hopping. And occasionally it’s confusing and sometimes jarring when you were just with one character and suddenly you’re in the head of another character without a pause or a chapter break. But seriously, my only complaint.
Harper Flynn was a great narrator!

Beautiful
Revisado: 01-12-20
Compelling. Beautiful. Complicated. Involved. Layered. Sticky. (Seriously, So Much Sticky.) Sometimes confusing. (Still not sure about the Owl King.) I’m thinking, no wonder it took her so long to write it, there’s like five books in here. I think I could have done without some of it (The Secret Diary?) but it was definitely a solid four star read.
(I don’t know if I’ll ever love a book the way I love The Night Circus. But I certainly welcome Ms. Morgenstern to tempt me.)
This was narrated by a number of different people. Most of them were fantastic. I especially enjoyed Dion Graham.
