Unpolished
Revisado: 01-06-25
I have listened to nearly all of Diane Mott Davidson’s mysteries. I have enjoyed them as light-hearted, funny and well organized diversions . This one was choppy, hard to follow and not fully ‘cooked’. I guessed immediately that it was an early book and when I did a computer search of her books in order- I saw it was listed as her first. They get better..

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

A surprising twist for a wordsmith
Revisado: 12-28-24
As a student of linguistics in college, I was well prepared in the study of language pejoration but uninformed about how difficult it was to find and convince males of the time to accept and validate female centered words in the first place.

Georgia Chambers has spent her life sifting through other people's pasts while trying to forget her own. But then her work as an expert on fine china - especially Limoges - requires her to return to the one place she swore she'd never revisit. It's been 13 years since Georgia left her family home on the coast of Florida, and nothing much has changed except that there are fewer oysters and more tourists.

Historia
As an FBI profiler, it's Lilah Love's job to think like a killer. And she is very good at her job. When a series of murders surface - the victims all stripped naked and shot in the head - Lilah's instincts tell her it's the work of an assassin, not a serial killer. But when the case takes her back to her hometown in the Hamptons and a mysterious but unmistakable connection to her own life, all her assumptions are shaken to the core.

Lilah Love is growing on me
Revisado: 02-10-23
I always rate a Mystery novel with Michael Connelly as my 'gold standard'. This is my second Lilah Love mystery and I give this book a 3 star review. It was ''Pretty Good'.
The story is a little slow at the start, but hang in with it. The protagonist is a female detective who is an expert in her field but is always fending of men who want to take to bed - not take her seriously.. By the end, some big secrets are revealed, bad memories are exposed...no BIG SOLVE.. Still, ..as a character, I think she has promise.

Historia
In Everything Trump Touches Dies, political campaign strategist and commentator Rick Wilson brings his darkly funny humor and biting analysis to the absurdity of American politics in the age of Trump. Wilson mercilessly exposes the damage Trump has done to the country, to the Republican Party he served for decades, and to the conservative movement that has abandoned its principles for the worst president in American history. No left-winger, Wilson is a lifelong conservative who delivers his withering critique of Trump from the right.

Revisado: 09-08-18
'Everything Trump Touches Dies' is a terrific, engaging, and informative book. Rick Wilson is articulate, smart and has an impressive knowledge of the GOP, this election and has quite a command of the language. I found that it was easy to get lost in the smart humor and spicy language and miss a point, so, I'll read it again.

Historia
In 2009, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band performed at the Super Bowl's halftime show. The experience was so exhilarating that Bruce decided to write about it. That's how this extraordinary autobiography began. Over the past seven years, Bruce Springsteen has privately devoted himself to writing the story of his life, bringing to this audio the same honesty, humor, and originality found in his songs.

An unexpected pleasure!
Revisado: 08-11-17
Would you listen to Born to Run again? Why?
I would listen again. In fact, I borrowed the audio from my town library, loved the book so much that I purchased it through audible.
What other book might you compare Born to Run to and why?
I've not read a memoir like this one. It's honest, tender and let's the reader follow his journey from poverty, aimlessness and rebellion to success - personally and professionally.
What about Bruce Springsteen’s performance did you like?
I liked his candor. Listening to Bruce read the book.. made me feel like I was at reunion with an old friend just talking about the twists and turns on the road of life.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Both - I laughed, I cried - mostly I was in awe of the depth in which he described his journey. His life could have turned into a gaudy, drug fueled mess. Instead, he invested in his own physical and mental health, reflected on his life, mended family fences, learned how to take care of himself and fulfilled his dream of building a family.
Any additional comments?
Until I read this book, I never listened to his music. I do now - and see him as a poet expressing through music the life events that were meaningful to him - whether personal or political. Truly, the man is a mensch. I highly recommend this read.

A movie director is charged with murdering an actress during sex, and then staging her death to make it look like a suicide. In a seemingly unrelated case, a loner is murdered, leaving the sheriff's department with no clues. One unsettling revelation after another leaves a retired FBI agent and an L.A. detective thinking they've unmasked a most frightening killer with almost inconceivable calculation.

Connelly and Bosch just keep getting better
Revisado: 11-25-16
Would you listen to A Darkness More than Night: Harry Bosch Series, Book 7 again? Why?
I will listen to Book 7 again. The story is complex and more than just a whodoneit. Harry, not still the damaged, hurt and abandoned boy - is strong, unwaveringly loyal and Connelly has provided a decidedly humanitarian ending. Unusual. I believe Book 7 will enrich Amazon's 'Bosch' series and I hope it is incorporated soon.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
It did not. Instead, it kept me thinking about the story between 'listenings' and asking myself questions. That drew me back to my earbuds.
Which character – as performed by Richard M. Davidson – was your favorite?
My favorite, always, is Bosch - performed by Titus Welliver.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. Many sittings. I will certainly listen again.
Any additional comments?
Keep writing Michael Connelly....keep writing.

Historia
Over the course of 10 Mitford novels, fans have kept a special place in their hearts for Dooley Kavanagh, first featured in At Home in Mitford as a barefoot, freckle-faced boy in filthy overalls. Now, Father Tim Kavanagh's adopted son has graduated from vet school and opened his own animal clinic. Since money will be tight for a while, maybe he and Lace Harper, his once and future soul mate, should keep their wedding simple.

Jan Karon is tired
Revisado: 11-06-15
Would you consider the audio edition of Come Rain or Come Shine to be better than the print version?
I do. Part of the book's attraction is the narration.
Would you recommend Come Rain or Come Shine to your friends? Why or why not?
I would only recommend it to tie up loose ends...not because I truly loved the book
Have you listened to any of John McDonough’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I think John McDonough's narration improved the quality of somewhat mediocre writing.
If you could take any character from Come Rain or Come Shine out to dinner, who would it be and why?
The Rector, of course.
Any additional comments?
The book was a bit 'tired'. It was difficult to feel connected to Lace because there is little history of Lace as a warm and 'in love' person. I also missed Cynthia's devotional tendency to call Timothy 'dearest'. When asked by Timothy what she wanted to 'do' next, she admitted that she just wanted to 'live' -- I interpreted it as Cynthia's wish to cease the stress of writing -- and that she spoke as Jan Karon, who, I think, is finished with this series.
