Narrator flawed
Revisado: 08-11-16
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
George Guidall is in my opinion, a very poor narrator. He swallows the letter "S" and runs words together in a fashion that makes him hard to understand. He sounds like a man with bad false teeth or a man who is slightly drunk and can't quite pronounce anything correctly. A better narrator would have helped.
What could Michael McGarrity have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
He needs to critically listen to his own narrations and get a good speech therapist to work with him.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of George Guidall?
You have any number of good male narrators on your staff that would have been a better choice.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Last Ranch?
When the army expanded into Matt's ranch territory and took it over the missile base, I would have liked to have seen more of a fight to get back the ranch. Matt seemed to have just given up. When he is transferred to the new position at the college in an attempt by the dept head to get rid of him, again, not much fight. He just quits. Not very interesting reading.
Any additional comments?
I kept waiting for something interesting to happen. Nothing did. Kind of a boring novel. I like westerns so I was disappointed.

narrator below average
Revisado: 07-01-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
It's way too long. It needs to be faster paced.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Haven't gotten to the end yet. Waiting for book 4 although there is no information about when book 4 might be released. I was astonished the author knocked off Hilda. She was one of the more interesting characters.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jack Bair?
I don't know all the narrators available but Mr. Blair needs help. He tends to read in a monotone. He also miss pronounces words. Perhaps his producers or editors need to listen more carefully and make him correct the miss pronunciations. When he tries to do a dialect, they all sound the same. Somewhere between Irish, Russian and "who knows."
Was Maps of Fate worth the listening time?
All the books are worth listening too but need to be shortened and streamlined.
Any additional comments?
I would like to hear book four, but there is no information on when it might be available.

Overwritten

Is there anything you would change about this book?
Shorten conversations between characters and shorten or eliminate and or shorten considerably inner, soul searching musings of individuals. Get to the plot movements and developments faster. The action sequences are good but to few and far between. If I were reading instead of listening I would skim through some of the more boring passages.
What do you think your next listen will be?
I am going to skip the rest of the series after completing the first two. There are enough audio books out there that are far more interesting then this.
Which character – as performed by Nick Podehl – was your favorite?
Rook. By the way, Nick Podehl did an excellent job with the material he had. My criticism of this book does not reflect in any way on his work as a reader.
Did A Warrior's Knowledge, Book 2 inspire you to do anything?
Read something else
Any additional comments?
The crazy evil Leana made no sense to me. If she could almost completely destroy the Outsiders stronghold then why not quickly do the same to Ashoka? I might have missed something there but since she hated the human race so much, why not go after the larger city first. But of course if she destroyed Ashoka first the book would pretty much be over.

What did you like best about A Warrior's Path? What did you like least?
I liked the story idea but found I got bored with the personal conversations between secondary characters. Cut down the individual conversations and get back to the action and plot. that should shorten the length of the book and keep the suspense going. In other words, tighten it up. P R

Great Story--bad reading
Revisado: 02-26-15
What did you like about this audiobook?
After watching and enjoying the TV series I was excited to hear the audio book version. I was disappointed by the reader. His diction is flawed. I couldn't figure out if he was slightly drunk or his false teeth were slipping but the slurred speech was not appreciated. I would try another from the Longmeyer novel but with a different reader.
How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?
I have always liked western adventures so this worked for me.
What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?
I had never heard work from this narrator before but was bothered by his slight speech impediment. I sounded to me like an older man trying work around bad false teeth or possible man just a little drunk. Not a good combination. I feel there are many good narrators available that might be a better match for the material.
Do you have any additional comments?
I never quite understood how Walt made it out of the forest carrying Standing Bear who was badly wounded. I got the fact he was helped by spirits but that didn't quite cover it.
