Historia
Anchorage, 1956. When Marie and Lawrence first lock eyes at the Moose Lodge, they are immediately drawn together. But when they decide to marry, days later, they are more in love with the promise of homesteading than anything. For Lawrence, his parcel of 150 acres is an opportunity to finally belong in a world that has never delivered on its promise. For Marie, the land is an escape from the empty future she sees spinning out before her, and a risky bet is better than none at all.

The book is a slow read but the reader made it slower! Had to go to the end to make sure I didn’t miss something.

Revisado: 07-26-23
This novel is heartfelt and will stay with me for some time. I have read some of the Cork series from this author and could not believe this book came from the same man. But then I can. This book brought up so many memories of my life at the same time as Frank’s it became so true to me.

Historia
Luli Wei is beautiful, talented, and desperate to be a star. Coming of age in pre-Code Hollywood, she knows how dangerous the movie business is and how limited the roles are for a Chinese American girl from Hungarian Hill—but she doesn't care. She’d rather play a monster than a maid. But in Luli's world, the worst monsters in Hollywood are not the ones on screen. The studios want to own everything from her face to her name to the women she loves, and they run on a system of bargains made in blood and ancient magic, powered by the endless sacrifice of unlucky starlets like her.

Not a Favorite!

I had no idea what kind of book this was but I hung in there for 4 hours and then had to quit. I could not understand the story or the characters and the narrator was terrible.

Pretty Good
Revisado: 03-11-22
I'm not sure what this book was really about. A woman moves to The Hague in Amsterdam as an interpreter in the Court which entails reading the nuances of their language and tone of voice. It seems that this carries over to her relationships with her friends and acquaintances. I never got a sense of who this woman was but rather that she spends most of her time thinking about what is or isn't been said.

Confusing and Boring
Revisado: 01-24-21
I can't say how many times in listening to this book that I wanted to stop and move on to another book. First all, this book was very confusing with too many bad guys with weird names showing up at Will's book shop. Secondly, the story was very confusing and difficult to follow. The narrator was OK but I had to turn the volume up to hear much of the dialog. I was very surprised at the intense sex scenes between the two lead male characters, Will and Kim. Not my cup of tea at all.

Love this Stuff!
Revisado: 06-29-20
Great murder mystery following in the path of Harry Bosch. The main character, Jack McEvoy has been around for several of Mr. Connelly's books and on some level can be a bit of a whiner when things go his way....but things do go his way and it all makes for a great listen!

Narrator is Key
Revisado: 06-20-20
A story can be OK if the narrator is very good, but with this book I struggled from the beginning with the narrator's voice and style. I wonder now if this would have been a better read than an audio book. The story is a good one about the couple who inhabited the Hotel Ritz in Paris during the Nazi occupation. The last 2 hours are riveting and I did like the ending by Lily!

When I read the reviews for this book I was almost put off by some of the reviews but I am very happy I ignored them. This book is multilayered and at times confusing but if you stick with it you will have met some wonderful women!
