Historia
We humans are the inheritors of a dynasty that has reigned over the planet for nearly 66 million years, through fiery cataclysm and ice ages: the mammals. Our lineage includes saber-toothed tigers, woolly mammoths, armadillos the size of a car, cave bears three times the weight of a grizzly, clever scurriers that outlasted Tyrannosaurus rex, and even other types of humans, like Neanderthals.

Excited about our mammal ancestors?
Revisado: 08-15-23
I love dinosaurs, and really enjoyed The Rise and Fall off the Dinosaurs. When I saw that Dr Brusatte had written about mammals, I knew I'd love this one too. Easy to understand science, without dumbing things down makes this book a great "commute listen". The accompaniment pdf helps fill in the blanks. A must!

Historia
Adored by children and adults alike, tyrannosaurus is the most famous dinosaur in the world, one that pops up again and again in pop culture, often battling other beasts such as King Kong, triceratops, or velociraptors in Jurassic Park. But despite the hype, tyrannosaurus and the other tyrannosaurs are fascinating animals in their own right and are among the best-studied of all dinosaurs.

Revisado: 01-20-23
I learned a lot about the tyrannosaurus as a whole, and the book was written in an approachable way. I didn't feel like I was wading through a dry text but I didn't feel like I was being read to in 2nd grade.

Dr Moore included other biologist and zoolists in this lecture, and asked them about their work in a way that brought the listener in to their mission of conservation. I learned so much more about the different conservancy programs through the Smithsonian, and look forward to seeing how much further they go. If you like animals you will enjoy this series.

Historia
For the past few hundred years, most of what we’ve been taught about the native cultures of North America came from reports authored by the conquerors and colonizers who destroyed them. Now - with the technological advances of modern archaeology and a new perspective on world history - we are finally able to piece together their compelling true stories. In Ancient Civilizations of North America, Professor Edwin Barnhart, Director of the Maya Exploration Center, will open your eyes to a fascinating world you never knew existed - even though you’ve been living right next to it, or even on top of it.

Dr Barnhart's interest and excitement are infectious in all the best ways! His lectures brought these Peoples to life with vibrant colour, and in a way that makes me want to learn more. He makes the point that "words matter" and is careful to use vocabulary that is respectful of the living descendants of these Peoples. If you have the tiniest curiosity about Ancient Civilizations in North America, check this lecture series out! You won't regret it, and you'll have a list of new places you want to visit, too!

Historia
In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris' recent best-seller, The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos.

Great Narrator; predictable story
Revisado: 10-03-19
This story/novel was about 10 hours too long. The Narrator was really good, but had a pretty predictable piece to work with. The story was not scary, even if you've never read a "haunted house" story, and the ending "twist" was about as twisty as the letter I.
Overly purple prose, and ridiculously ornate descriptions of everything-- every time you see it. I wondered a few times if the author was paid by the word, because of the amount of adjectives and adverbs thrown in to modify every single noun. It was infuriating, and didn't make the scene easier to imagine, but detracted from what could have been a great setting.
Some slight spoilers ahead (notes on characters, no story spoilers):
All the characters were flat, single dimensional, barely sketched out, and none of them had much personality; they were 1 or 2 "traits" as opposed to fleshed out persons. There was nothing about them to invest the reader. Poor Daniel Slaughter, you can't go three minutes without hearing about how overweight he was-- that's the entirety of his personality: he's religious and fat. That's all there is to him. The TC Moore character was written as a stereotypical "ball buster" and comes across as written by an absolute misogynist (she's an "angry feminist" and "broken") She could have been a good character, but she was flattened to make room for the author-insert, Sam McGarver.
Ah, Sam... he wanted to be a Mary Sue-- but was too flat. He wasn't likable, and is the kind of character that makes a reader root for the haunting entity. I wanted Sam to fail, because he was just so annoying! He was written as if a 14 year old boy was describing a tall, dark and handsome man, with a traumatic past, and a problem with alcohol. His "tics" made me wonder if the author was trying to mock persons with autism (the constant arm grabbing when he's stressed, for one, made me think of stimming behaviours).
I can't recommend this author, or this book. I can, and do recommend the narrator, and am off to see if he has done anything else!

Historia
Most children go through a dinosaur phase. Learning all the tongue-twisting names, picking favourites based on ferocity, armour, or sheer size. For many kids this love of ‘terrible lizards’ fizzles out at some point between starting and leaving primary school. All those fancy names slowly forgotten, no longer any need for a favourite. For all those child dino fanatics who didn’t grow up to become paleontologists, dinosaurs seem like something out of mythology. They are dragons, pictures in books, abstract, other, extinct.

Historia
The year was 1917. As a war raged across the world, young American women flocked to work, painting watches, clocks, and military dials with a special luminous substance made from radium. It was a fun job, lucrative and glamorous - the girls themselves shone brightly in the dark, covered head to toe in the dust from the paint. They were the radium girls. As the years passed, the women began to suffer from mysterious and crippling illnesses.

The Radium Girls are heroes, even almost 100 years later. This book takes you through their lives, showing the joys and sorrows as they fought for justice for their illnesses caused by profit-driven companies. I cried for them and their families; raged against the corps, and cheered when they finally won.

Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

Historia
The story of poison is the story of power. For centuries, royal families have feared the gut-roiling, vomit-inducing agony of a little something added to their food or wine by an enemy. To avoid poison, they depended on tasters, unicorn horns, and antidotes tested on condemned prisoners. Servants licked the royal family's spoons, tried on their underpants, and tested their chamber pots. Ironically, royals terrified of poison were unknowingly poisoning themselves daily with their cosmetics, medications, and filthy living conditions.
