I’ve listened to all the Widow books and
enjoyed them all, some more than others. So far, in spite of the fact that all the Widow books more or less seem follow a formula, (wanders into some town, gorgeous woman in distress, very bad villains, Widow prevails
against almost insurmountable odds, etc)
this is Scott Blade’s best Widow book. Same
formula but with more texture, more inventiveness, etc. And the reader IS Jack Widow. If you’re a Widow fan, don’t miss this one

I’ve read or listened to every book in this series. Elvis and Pike are like family to me. Robert Crais knows how to craft tight detective fiction as well as anyone and better than most. I eagerly await the next one and hope Crais is already at work on it.

Full disclosure: Marcie and I are in a writing group together. “Where They Last Saw Her” is a heartbreakingly beautiful piece of writing. What we, the immigrant group that invaded this country, have done to native women since our arrival until today is a disgrace. Further, what men in general have done to women over the millennia is unforgivable. What Marcie has done in this book is show the reader the reality of life for too many native women and girls. The book is neither a political treatise nor a cultural rant; rather, Marcie has written a wonderful piece of fiction that allows the reader to feel the reality that native women have had and continue to bear. Read this book and thank me later. Last words: Marcie does not know that I’m writing this review and I truly believe that my knowing her has in no way influenced what I wrote. I’m not that nice a person.

I’ve listened to every Joe Ledger book. A couple twice. I love them. Want them to never end. But, this book took a little too long to get going. Did I enjoy it? Of course. Was Ray Porter pitch perfect? Hell yes! A little more editing next time Mr Mayberry and you will take Joe back to perfection.

Ray Porter could read the dictionary and I’d enjoy it but he really outdid himself here. Great story with enough science to make the story plausible and at the end I was left wanting more. Thanks Andy Weir and Ray Porter. Thanks very much.

My normal Audible book involves shooting and assorted mayhem. They’re mostly ear candy for the road. Once in awhile I reach for something a bit different to keep my brain from turning to mush. In this instance I reached for The Bartender’s Tale and I was glad I did. The characters were sharp and consistent throughout and the narrator was dead on perfect except as regards the historian-he did indeed sound like Mickey Mouse. That one glitch aside, this is a marvelous book you will not regret listening to.

There were times when I wanted to stop listening and switch to something more intelligent but I persevered and I’m glad I did. I’m an ex-New Yorker who loved the local in jokes and references and thought the reader did a fabulous job with accents and attitudes. The story was a little too inane at times but I’d actually get a next book if this becomes a series. My final thought is that sometimes it’s ok to lighten up and listen to spoof with an undercurrent of politics slipped in.

Like many others, I could listen to Ray Porter read the dictionary and enjoy the experience. The good news is that this new adventure by Dennis Taylor was way more interesting than the dictionary. Science fiction is better when it has some connection to reality, which this book definitely has. It also has good character development, a story that develops at a perfect pace and a conclusion that makes sense within the scope of the story and leaves open the possibility for more in the future. Don’t hesitate.

Once in a great while a book is written that opens one’s mind and heart and let’s love flow in. This is just such a book. The humanity of the richly crafted characters will live for generations.

Every now and then I try something new from an author I don’t know. Usually I’m either disappointed or merely disinterested. In this spirit I listened to The Driver by Hart Hanson. Great book! Interesting and well drawn characters you care about, relatively plausible plot and a highly satisfactory ending. And Ariel Fliakos is the perfect reader. There better be a second book on the horizon or I’m going to be sorely disappointed.
