I taught middle school English for 41 years and I always found it interesting that girls would identify with a boy main character (e.g. Tom Sawyer) but boys, while they might like or admire a girl main character, never identify with her. Frank Zaccari, in When the Wife Cheats, speaks for all of us that have suffered the slings and arrows of infidelity. Having been through a very similar experience, I could feel my own heart aching as he tried to "do better" and "do more". I've been there. I grew angry when he was accused of "not valuing" Denise, because I had heard those words before. Frank's use of irony is brilliant - the reader knows what's happening long before the narrator does, and I kept wanting to shout "Tony! She's cheating on you!" No one marries with the intent that they will divorce. Frank has captured the essence of the pain of infidelity and its impact on the family - especially the children. It's the ultimate act of selfishness. I realize that this story is being told from the husband's point of view - unusual on in these circumstances - and its brutal honesty and heartfelt emotion and pain make this a gripping read for anyone. I would hope that anyone contemplating infidelity would read this book. It could save their marriage. Frank Zaccari is a great writer. He sets the reader up and brings them into the story so that we feel like we are part of the narrative. I recommend this book without reservation.

Five Years to Live is based on a true story and one similar to one that my family has experienced. Frank Zaccari is right - that phone call is one that no one ever expects or wants to get, but one that changes your life forever. I've read the book several times and it never fails to bring chills. Listening to the audiobook brought not only chills but tears. (I've never listened to an audiobook before, but plan on doing so from now on!) . Frank captured and related the story of an individual with a spinal cord injury beautifully. He also relates the impact that it has on every aspect of the person's life. Not only does it impact the person involved, but also their family and friends. And like in Michael's case, the individual has to take the lead. There is no one in this world that I respect and admire as much as I do the real life "Michael." He has triumphed over his injury, he leads an incredible life of service to others, he has found a beautiful love, and he leads the way for my son - another Michael.
