Malört may be the worst thing you'll ever taste. Known primarily for its intense bitterness, the infamous Chicago liqueur has been compared to "a forest fire, if the forest was made of earwax." Yet lurking in the horror and the mockery lies the truth of Malört: we keep going back for more. For nearly a hundred years, we've gone back.

Excellent read on a piece of Chicago history
Revisado: 10-04-24
Great book, especially if you are interested in Chicago history or are a proud Chicagoan. Also a bit of a bummer depending on how you fell about where Malört has gone. But well worth the read.

A great continuation of one of Deep Space Nine’s best characters. I wish there was a sequel to this that I could start immediately.

Boring and predictable
Revisado: 07-23-23
Yeah I don’t think I’ll finish this series. The narrator is good. I can understand all they say and the variation in character voices are good. But the story isn’t new and is fairly predictable. Just another boring mix of fantasy elements and sci fi. That really isn’t my type of story. I prefer just sci fi. So this series really isn’t for me.

God gawd get an editor
Revisado: 07-06-23
Yet another book about throwing kids against each other by adults in a “dystopian” future. The subject matter is nothing original and the book was in dire need of editing. You could cut every other sentence and make it a tighter, better book. When the story is good, it’s good. But then it drags for a long stretch of time. You can tell this was the authors first book, and it feels a little like they were trying to learn how to drive a stick shift in its pace. Narration was good. You could hear everything and the words were clear, despite the thick accident, unlike another popular narrator that is next to impossible to understand or hear half the time.
I’m going to continue on with the series. At least the next book. If it doesn’t get any better then I’ll move on.

Historia
Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

Doesn’t age well
Revisado: 04-27-23
It’s okay. Some ideas in here that were ahead of it’s time for when this came out. But there are some sections that haven’t aged well and honestly I wouldn’t have thought was tasteful when the book came out.

Disappointing end to a series that had promise
Revisado: 01-11-23
First off, I don’t understand why people think John Lee is a good narrator. Maybe it’s production and direction he is given but I often have a hard time hearing him and he often changes how he reads some characters across books. I found that same problem with The Prefect / Elysium Fire. I think if I had read the book instead of listened then I may give it an additional star.
But that leads me to the story, which felt like a hot mess. Did Reynolds not have an editor? At times it just felt like the same thing was being said over and over or the same argument was occurring with some minor details changed. Ten hours of this could have easily been cut from this and it may have been a tighter, better story. And I am say this as someone who loves a good, long space opera.
The ending was extremely disappointing. Your going to spend 28ish hours in this story only to quickly, kind of wrap it up in 15 mins at the end? Brutal. Just brutal. I expected Reynolds to jump out at the end, yell “sucker” and then run away laughing I had spent near 30 hours of my life in that….
As one other reviewer stated: “we’ll always have Chasm City.”

Be cautious of the pseudo science
Revisado: 08-03-21
There are some good things in this book but also be careful of the pseudo science. Maybe it’s a flaw of audio books but many times over the author will say “science has proven this” but there is no references to studies, articles, etc. also be cautious of the diet items. As some one who was a certified nutrition coach, I agree with John on many points (no processed food, no fast food, etc). But you can not point to one or two people who eat a certain way and say to follow their diets and you will be successful. Also research the diet focused movies he references and you will find loads of controversy. I was vegan for many years and I did it correctly (yes that candy may be vegan but it isn’t good for you) and it decimated my body. Once I threw in some fish every now and then or chicken/eggs my health rebounded, my mind became active again and all the health issues I had went away. Always eat breakfast? No, sorry. That doesn’t work for every one. In fact I feel better and perform better when I skip breakfast at least three to four times a week.
What it comes down to is finding what works for you. The problem with so many of these books is that a majority of people I speak to about stuff like this just ingests what the book says and when it doesn’t work for them, give up. Outside the basics (lots of fresh organic veggies and some fruits) we all tend to need different things. So experiment and find what works best for you. Don’t support the meat industry by any means but if you need meat or fish go find the farmers market and get some
from your local farm. Yes it’s pricy but it will help you not eat as much of those things. A few times a week is fine.
There are many good points in this book. I don’t come at this just from a “science based” mind. And I believe veganism can be good for a lot of people, but not every one. But agree with John that learning to cook your own food and avoid all the junk out there is key. I’d even say learn to grow your own food. It gives you a deeper connection with what you eat. Even if you plant one kale or chard plant in your back yard. You will be amazed at how much you get from that one plant and you may be more willing to put those greens in to each meal you eat.
Production work is a bit rough. Would have been nice if there were a few more pauses between some sentences.
Overall a decent book but not one I’ll recommend if I am being honest. I recommend “Evolution of a Cro-Magnon” by Mr. Joseph as I think it’s a much more inspiring book.
(Please know I write these things as some one who used to be right at 300 lbs and now weighs half of that)

Can’t even get a quarter of the way through this book. Narration is terrible.
Revisado: 06-08-21
I don’t know if it’s the sound engineer and director or just the narrator, but this is by far the worst narration and production I’ve heard in any audio book. The narration goes from loud to VERY quiet. The story jumps around a lot and there are no pauses for scene breaks, so unlike reading a physical book, you don’t know what story line the next sentence read is going to be from. I had to slow the audio down a lot just to be able to understand what the narrator was saying. And crank the volume.
I’m bummed. Been wanting to read this for a while but unless the publisher decides to remake this with a different narrator I probably will never read it. Or any of the books this narrator reads. I’ve seen many of the same complaints about other books he has read.
Update: As many people suggested, I went back and read Chasm City, and then attempted this. book again. It helped a lot. While my complaints on the products and narration stand, it did make it a bit easier to get through the book. I still had to re-wind a lot to try to understand what was happening. Last half of this book is great. Chasm City is wonderful, and pieces of the next book in the series are good too. Just avoid the final book in the series.

Historia
As President Trump’s national security advisor, John Bolton spent many of his 453 days in the room where it happened, and the facts speak for themselves. The result is one of the few White House memoirs to date by a top-level official. With almost daily access to the president, John Bolton has produced a precise rendering of his days in and around the Oval Office. What Bolton saw astonished him: a president for whom getting reelected was the only thing that mattered, even if it meant endangering or weakening the nation.
