Reality of American slavery
Revisado: 02-13-25
It took me awhile to manage the discipline required to actively listen to this first hand account of American slavery for Black people. I wish America could be as brave, honest and forthright about our history. I would like this to be one of the mandatory readings.

The actress Uzo Aduba came of age grappling with a master juggling act: as one of few Black families in their white Massachusetts suburb, she and her siblings were the unexpected presence in whatever school room or sports team they joined. But Aduba was also rooted by a fierce and nonnegotiable sense of belonging and extraordinary worth that stemmed from her mother’s powerful vision for her children, and their connection to generations of family in Nigeria.

What I missed
Revisado: 12-07-24
This was a delight to listen to a Nigerian woman tell her story. Because of the science of DNA I now know that the majority of my DNA traces back to Nigerian.
I wish I had my own language, a specific name that has meaning in my culture. I am so grateful and thankful for Uzo Aduba. This book has given me another peak into one of the possible storylines that could have been mine.

Historia
Ta-Nehisi Coates originally set out to write a book about writing, in the tradition of Orwell’s classic “Politics and the English Language,” but found himself grappling with deeper questions about how our stories—our reporting and imaginative narratives and mythmaking—expose and distort our realities. In the first of the book’s three intertwining essays, Coates, on his first trip to Africa, finds himself in two places at once: in Dakar, a modern city in Senegal, and in a mythic kingdom in his mind.

Once I was blind...
Revisado: 10-16-24
Yes, I have to agree with Mr. Coates when he mentioned that his view (i.e., and many Americans view) of the Palestinian people was one sided. I too, let my views of the Palestinians people be created by what I saw on American television. Now I am curious. I would like to experience that part of the world for myself. Currently, Mr. Coates is receiving the a tremendous amount, a blowback because of his journalistic point-of-view and reporting on what he saw & experienced in Israel and Palestine. I encourage readers to
investigate for themselves. And to compliment your education by watching the Trevor Noah's interview of Mr. Coates for his podcast. Yes, it's on YouTube. In this current climate of political unrest, stress, high tension and YES, frustration in America. I am proud that Mr. Coates took the time to investigate, research and then write a book about his and firsthand experiences. The Message is a powerful, and thought provoking book. Once I was blind, but now I see. Well done!

Practical wisdom
Revisado: 09-19-24
I understand the tempation of recording the book you may have written. However, voice actors are professional reader's. OK, that's just a pet pev for me. That a side this is an excellent book. I have recently been diagnosed with ADHD and can relate to almost everything Dr. Hamdani shared about life from an ADHD perspective. If you have ADHD or you have a loved one walking through life with it, this book could be a tremendous help to you.
