Historia
Being President doesn't make things any easier, Jack Ryan finds out, especially when trouble's brewing in Moscow and China. Blending the exceptional realism and authenticity that are his hallmarks with intricate plotting, razor-sharp suspense, and a remarkable cast of characters, this is Clancy at his best - and there is none better.

A Must for Tom Clancy Fans

Great book, one of Clancy's best. The narration is spot on - well nuanced, but not over-dramatized.

Historia
In this fascinating foray into the centuries-old relationship between science and military power, acclaimed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and writer-researcher Avis Lang examine how the methods and tools of astrophysics have been enlisted in the service of war. "The overlap is strong, and the knowledge flows in both directions," say the authors, because astrophysicists and military planners care about many of the same things: multi-spectral detection, ranging, tracking, imaging, high ground, nuclear fusion, and access to space. Tyson and Lang call it a "curiously complicit" alliance.

Disappointing
Revisado: 01-16-19
Normally, I'm a big fan of Dr. Tyson's writings. This one, not so much. Too much angst, too little science.

Historia
First appearing in print in 1890, the character of Sherlock Holmes has now become synonymous worldwide with the concept of a super sleuth. His creator, Conan Doyle, imbued his detective hero with intellectual power, acute observational abilities, a penchant for deductive reasoning and a highly educated use of forensic skills. Indeed, Doyle created the first fictional private detective who used what we now recognize as modern scientific investigative techniques.

Poor Choice of Narrator

The narrator’s accent is all wrong for the characters. The Simon Vance version is much better.

Historia
From the acclaimed master of action and suspense. The all-time classic. Millions of pounds in gold bullion are being pirated in the Irish Sea. Investigations by the British Secret Service, and a sixth sense, have bought Philip Calvert to a bleak, lonely bay in the Western Highlands. But the sleepy atmosphere of Torbay is deceptive. The place is the focal point of many mysterious disappearances. Even the unimaginative Highland Police Sergeant seems to be acting a part. But why?

Terrible Narrator
Revisado: 12-04-17
Would you try another book from Alistair MacLean and/or Jonathan Oliver?
Alastair MacLean? Absolutely! Jonathan Oliver? Not even on a dare.
What other book might you compare When Eight Bells Toll to and why?
John LeCarre, or Ian Fleming, would be the closest comparisons, I think. MacLean was probably the best of the Cold War - spy - thriller authors, at least until Tom Clancy came along. All of MacLean’s novels are really great reads, and “Eight Bells” is one of his best.
Would you be willing to try another one of Jonathan Oliver’s performances?
Not only no, but h*ll no. Listening to him ruin two good books was three too many.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Extreme disappointment. A really great book, one of my favorites, ruined by terrible narration.
Any additional comments?
Did someone really think Jonathan Oliver was a good choice of narrator? Really? Please, please... for the love of good literature, and all that is decent and good, re-do the entire Alastair MacLean collection, with a narrator who doesn’t make every character sound like a tweaked-out cockney cab driver. Perhaps Simon Vance, Michael Pritchard, David Tennant (perfect choice!), or Frank Muller?

Historia
The classic World War II thriller from the acclaimed master of action and suspense. One winter night, seven men and a woman are parachuted onto a mountainside in wartime Germany. Their objective: an apparently inaccessible castle, headquarters of the Gestapo. Their mission: to rescue a crashed American general before the Nazi interrogators can force him to reveal secret D-day plans.

Great Book, Terrible Performance
Revisado: 12-04-17
This is one of my all-time favorite thrillers. But, in this case, a great book is all but ruined by a truly terrible narrator. His accent is atrocious. He makes Smith and Wyatt-Turner, characters of brilliance and sophistication, sound like uneducated cockneys, who scream constantly.
Please! Do it over, and get Simon Vance, Frank Muller or Micheal Pritchard to do the reading.

Historia
There is a clear conspiracy to deny the existence of UFOs. The mainstream media has misinformed us for years about UFO studies conducted by highly regarded scientists associated with some of the finest universities in the country. There is significant evidence that the US government has covered up the alien presence through misinformation, distortion, obfuscation, and ridicule. Some prominent, politically connected scientists have engaged in the cover up.

Unfortunate
Revisado: 12-03-17
Stanton Friedman used to be one of my favorite UFO researchers. Unfortunately, he appears to have let personal animosity and bitterness take over his work. Far from being an objective study of the phenomena, this is just a long-winded ad hominem diatribe. Sad.

The Best I've Found
Revisado: 04-07-09
This format works! The speakers introduce the language in clear, managable bites, each new addition building on the last. There is also a light jazz background that seems to help with both focus and cadence. It's far easier to learn, master, and remember the phrases than with other, similar products that I've tried.
I do a fair amount of business travel, and have found that being able to speak at least a few phrases in the local language goes a long way in terms of goodwill and cooperation. I've tried several other language programs, and the "Rapid" series is, for me at least, by far the most effective.
Now, if they'll just release Thai, Korean, Hungarian and Arabic versions...

Don’t Waste Your Time/Money
Revisado: 04-26-08
The original (unedited) book is an amazingly good read. I’d give the unabridged version six stars, if I could. At less than 3 hours in length, this isn’t even a good synopsis of a brief overview of a short summary. Really, its not much more than “The Soviets needed oil. They started a war. They lost.”
The unabridged version is over 31 hours. You just can’t cut >90% out of a book, and expect it to retain any of the quality of the original.
