Historia
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Fantastic voice work!

Great story, entertaining premise. Not so heavy on the leveling/stats. MC is considerably less powerful than his Cat. To the surprise of zero cats :)

Dying the first time sucked. Matt's trying to avoid a repeat performance. For Matt, joining Earth's last line of defense was exactly the purpose he needed. Saving the world could be fun—if you don’t mind a little soul-crushing responsibility. But being killed and reincarnated into the battlefield chaos of a 4x game world wasn't what he had in mind. The world map is made out of hexagrams, the units are semi-sentient and his opponents have a head start. As if that wasn't enough, there's no instruction manual for this nightmare.

Interesting approach to LitRPG!
Revisado: 09-11-24
Instead of a powerful character becoming overpowered, a somewhat uninformed normal guy put in strategic command of a kingdom in a command/conquer situation. Narrator did a good job in distinguishing the character voices from each other, and the pace of the story kept engagement high. Overall, a fun romp in a magic kingdom.
Be aware, this is more a collection of novellas than a typical 4- book series, so the entire set will go by quickly! The solution? Read more Tao Wong books :)

Good thing he's got a new class and new allies.

Conclusion of 2nd arc
Revisado: 08-22-24
I sincerely appreciate the way the series keeps opening up the protagonist’s (and thus the reader’s) eyes to a more complicated and nuanced world. Absolutely fantastic.
The narration is top-notch; I’ve recommended it to friends to show just how a great narrator _ should_ sound. Conversational, natural… so good that the narrator disappears and you can’t imagine the story any other way.

As we go deeper into the series, important questions are raised and decisions are made that have consequences. Not just “kill more better level up!” Possibly my favorite series in the genre.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

One of my favorite Audiobooks
Revisado: 08-13-23
This was outstanding. I liked The Martian quite a lot, but I like this book even more. A masterfully constructed story, with nuances that transcend what one typically expects of the genre. The narration was outstanding, and the production gave the performance that little boost, not enough to become distracting or annoying, but enough to provide that feeling of otherness the protagonist encounters on his journey. Full of unexpected challenges to be overcome, and taking more than one quite unexpected turn, I found myself listening intently to find out what happens next.
Recommended without reservation. If you liked The Martian, I think you’ll love Project Hail Mary.

Not for John Lee. His search for answers for the System Quest has taken him deep into the Forbidden Zone, into the very arms of his enemies. He's betrayed family and friends and been betrayed in turn. The most powerful human in the System has come to the final leg of his journey. And still, he has no idea if what he will find will fill the burning need within him. For the Redeemer of the Dead will not stop, until the cries of the lost and the sacrificed are answered.

Revisado: 01-21-23
Even better than I hoped for: such good action scenes, and a satisfying ending that illustrated masterful command of literary fidelity. If somehow you see this review before you have experienced any of the previous audiobooks, hurry and start from the beginning. It’s a wonderful ride.
Peak litRPG writing, and Nick Podehl has become one of my favorite narrators.

Good book, narrator was ok with the dialogue, but awkward with descriptive text. Overall a decent job. The series gets progressively worse (imho) but I think this book is the high point in the series. Gets even more preachy later.

Very strong start for a worldship
Revisado: 08-15-20
Great start with the political moves and countermoves it would take to get a worldship built, much less launched. 5/5 for that section
3.5/5 for the society they leave on the worldship; some so clear the builder’s should have anticipated them.
5/5 moving characters, as well as very strong voice performance. Would recommend!

Much, much better storyline than the movie. The “oral history” approach suits the audiobook format perfectly. Great cast - Alan Alda and Marc Hamill were highlights. Intelligent, engaging - highly recommended.

The lives of six female superheroes and the girlfriends of superheroes. A ferocious riff on women in superhero comics. From the New York Times best-selling author Catherynne Valente comes a series of linked stories from the points of view of the wives and girlfriends of superheroes, female heroes, and anyone who's ever been "refrigerated": comic book women who are killed, raped, brainwashed, driven mad, disabled, or had their powers taken so that a male superhero's storyline will progress.

Revisado: 05-01-18
Great storyline, love how it’s tied together(inventive!), and how it’s paced; some works don’t do as well being listened to, but this book was well suited to the approach. Top-notch narration, as well. I hate to gush like this but hey, there it is. My only complaint is that there were not 30 hours of it to listen to :).
On the + side of that, plenty of room for a sequel.
