Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

Historia
With the country in the grip of the Black Death, brothers John and William fear that they will shortly die and suffer in the afterlife. But as the end draws near, they are given an unexpected choice: either to go home and spend their last six days in their familiar world, or to search for salvation across the forthcoming centuries - living each one of their remaining days 99 years after the last. John and William choose the future and find themselves in 1447, ignorant of almost everything going on. The year 1546 brings no more comfort, and 1645 challenges them further....

snooze time

I found myself walking away from the speaker out of boredom... that never happens with books. Boring descriptions of how the neighborhood has changed.

Historia
In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box. But when the Eastwood sisters - James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna - join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement.

just witchy enough!
Revisado: 12-11-20
This story was very engaging. I listen while I work on painting projects...walls, furniture etc.,and I found that if I walked out of the room, I simply had to back up and listen to what I missed. I didn't want to lose one bit of the story. Alix Harrow is a very good storyteller. I sometimes felt certain vocabulary was out of place in the 1890's dialogue, but it was easy to overlook because the story kept moving. I didn't feel any dragged out narrative at all. I need an owl, for sure, and no longer worry about not having a witch in my maternal ancestry. Enjoy!
