Historia
747 is the thrilling story behind "the Queen of the Skies" - the Boeing 747 - as told by Joe Sutter, one of the most celebrated engineers of the 20th century, who spearheaded its design and construction. Sutter's vivid narrative takes us back to a time when American technology was cutting-edge and jet travel was still glamorous and new. With wit and warmth, he gives an insider's sense of the larger than life-size personalities - and the tensions - in the aeronautical world.

Historia
As the Allies raced to defeat Hitler, four men, all in the same unit, earned medal after medal for battlefield heroism. Maurice “Footsie” Britt, a former professional football player, became the very first American to receive every award for valor in a single war. Michael Daly was a West Point dropout who risked his neck over and over to keep his men alive. Keith Ware would one day become the first and only draftee in history to attain the rank of general before serving in Vietnam. In WWII, Ware owed his life to the finest soldier he ever commanded, a baby-faced Texan named Audie Murphy.

Unflagging sacrifice and valor in the face of defeat
Revisado: 10-24-24
Like - excellent narration, good pace, right amount of details, satisfying wrap-up
Dislike - nothing. It is inevitably difficult to keep so many individuals straight while listening (or reading). But this is a small thing and the author refreshes the characters in a manner that helps the reader
I highly recommend this book

Six-legged zombies
Revisado: 08-23-24
In fairness to the authors, I did not read much of the description of this series. My review is based on jumping into these books without knowing the premise. My fault, not theirs.
Spoiler alert!
I am not a fan of zombie novels. This was my feeling listening to this series. The “slicks” were very similar to zombies in other stories. They were relentless, innumerable, and so driven as to neglect their own greater good.
And the attacks by the slicks where characters barely escape was repetitive to a fault. Sure, several key characters did die this way, but far too many survived over and over again.
There were also positive aspects. The characters were very well developed. The similes were entertaining. The narration was excellent.
I listened all the way through. As a box set it was a lot for the money. I would call it a good value. If you enjoy zombie stories then I do recommend this series.

Entertaining series. Well paced writing and delivery. Great character development. Interesting plot.
A few too many convenient circumstances make it hard to believe at times. But I will give the author credit for not wanting the total story to be too dark.
Overall I do recommend this box set for quality storytelling and entertainment. I will look for more of his work.

Much detail and foreign language
Revisado: 12-19-22
This book is as much the history of getting the project started by two nations as it is about the building of it. My preference would have been a lighter exploration of the politics and personalities and more about the physical and technological pursuits.
Additional, while I appreciate the accurate pronunciation of non-English words and phrases, I wish the author had consistently explained the definitions of all such language. It was frustrating to not understand some of what had been written.
Overall, this is a thorough story of the building of the Panama Canal. It is told well by the narrator. And my understanding of the roles and contributions of France and the USA is much greater than before reading the book.

Historia
Here, in his own words, is the true story of America's wildest flying hero, of his extraordinary heroism, and of his greatest battle of all-the fight to survive. The World War II air war in the Pacific needed tough men like Colonel Pappy Boyington and his Black Sheep Squadron. The legendary Marine Corps officer and his bunch of misfits, outcasts, and daredevils gave a new definition to "hell-raising" - on the ground and in the skies.

Worst narration on Audible
Revisado: 08-30-21
Perhaps it is just me. I tried, I really did. But between a story with inconsistent details and the worst narration on Audible that I have experienced, it was not possible to finish this book.
First, I blame the editor as much as I do Eric Martin for the train wreck. Why someone with oversight couldn’t make the decision to change narrators is beyond me. But I now know to avoid any Audible book with Mr. Martin involved. Sorry to sound mean-spirited. I don’t know the man and it isn’t personal. I warn any customer to try a sample before they buy.
As for the story, it could be amazing. But there are too many places in this account where critical details just don’t appear. Overall, I could have persevered through for the cogent portions if the narration wasn’t so grating.

Historia
In the 1950s, at the age of 14, Little Freddie King hopped a southbound freight train in McComb, Mississippi, fleeing the life of a sharecropper’s son in what was then the "worst part of the most intransigent state" in Jim Crow-era Dixie. Landing in New Orleans, he taught himself to play blues guitar, then found work performing at the city’s corner nightclubs, including one nicknamed the Bucket of Blood for its nightly eruptions of violence. Dodging bullets and drinking with abandon, he became a fixture in the subterranean blues scene.

Gifted storyteller Winston Groom, the best-selling author of Forrest Gump, has written the fascinating story of three extraordinary heroes who defined aviation during the great age of flight: Charles Lindbergh, Eddie Rickenbacker, and Jimmy Doolittle. These cleverly interwoven tales of their heart-stopping adventures take us from the feats of World War I through the heroism of World War II and beyond, including daring military raids and survival at sea, and will appeal to fans of Unbroken, The Greatest Generation, and Flyboys.

More than I imagined
Revisado: 12-19-20
Let me begin by praising the narration. The pace and tone did justice to the content. Kept it moving and interesting, with just the right nuance. The narrator never interfered with the text or the listener, but added inflection to bring written words to life.
The comparison and contrast of the three Americans presents new information on the aviators and their times. It is remarkable that all three lived so long and continued to impact the world around them.
I recommend this book not only to fans of aviation but to anyone who enjoys 20th Century American history.

In the first and most reliable biography of Daniel Boone in more than 50 years, award-winning historian Faragher brilliantly portrays America's famous frontier hero while illuminating the American hero-making process itself. Drawing from popular narrative, the public record, scraps of documentation from Boone's own hand, and a treasure trove of reminiscences gathered by nineteenth-century antiquarians, Faragher uses the methods of new social history to create a portrait of the man and the times he helped shape.

Revisado: 12-09-20
Perhaps the best biography I have ever read. Wonderful storytelling. Don’t take this to suggest that this is light on history. The author brings authoritative facts to a true historical narrative.
There were times I did not want to put this down. Incidents were, at times, spellbinding. Then there were the humorous accounts that caused me to laugh out loud.
Having visited the Boone home in Missouri, I was anxious to know how he would deal with the controversy of two gravesites: one near the Missouri home and another in Kentucky. I was pleased with the information. No spoilers in my review!
I recommend this book to lovers of history, Boone, and early American expansion. I learned more than I could have anticipated. The Boone I met here is 98 percent different than the Boone I had known before.

An outstanding read
Revisado: 05-05-20
Rarely do I take the time to write a review. This book deserves my time. It is warm, humorous, and nostalgic. It combines a time capsule of Americana and a glimpse of a family struggling before government handouts.
It is a celebration of achievement. It is also a picture of what a family can achieve by finding the highest value in what matters most about life. Told with wit and a compelling narrative, I found it difficult to put down.
Finally, and perhaps the greatest compliment, I was sad to hear it end. The author did a wonderful job of completing the story, a story that deserved to be told. It is the historical account of an amazing but simple women. It is a story that deserves to be told...and heard.
