Historia
In the midst of World War II, an English musician, Norah Chambers, places her eight-year-old daughter Sally on a ship leaving Singapore, desperate to keep her safe from the Japanese army as they move down through the Pacific. Norah remains to care for her husband and elderly parents, knowing she may never see her child again. Sister Nesta James, a Welsh Australian nurse, has enlisted to tend to Allied troops. But as Singapore falls to the Japanese she joins the terrified cargo of people, including the heartbroken Norah, crammed aboard the Vyner Brooke merchant ship.

Historia
Dr. Francis Collins, head of the Human Genome Project, is one of the world's leading scientists, yet he is also a man of unshakable faith in God and scripture. Dr. Collins has resolved the dilemma that haunts everyone who believes in God and respects science. Faith in God and faith in science can be harmonious, not separately but together, combined into one worldview. For Collins, science does not conflict with the Bible, science enhances it.

Reason, Facts, Truth
Revisado: 05-08-24
I am a Christian with a science background. I always struggled with the literal interpretation of Genesis. Dr. Collins lays out everything so beautifully and factually. The fact that he was an atheist turned Christian by his scientific study, gives great weight The book. Now I know that I am really an evolutionary theist, and there is a way to marriage science and religion. Excellent book!

Overall a good book
Revisado: 08-26-23
I’ve read many WWII historical fiction books and this one was good but I found others that were much better. The narration for Violette was weird. when she spoke in her Cockney English accent she put Z‘s on everything that had a TH which is a bit unbelievable and disturbing. When you grow up, speaking French and English at an early age, I do not think that you would make that mistake. French people that learn English sometimes have difficulty pronouncing the TH sound but not someone that grows up bilingual like she did. It was very annoying.

Not worthy of the author!
Revisado: 08-20-23
Short stories, actually, all stories, should have a beginning, middle, and an end. The short stories ended abruptly for no rhyme or reason. It was really unsettling. The narration by the author to introduce each short story was like a chipmunk on speed it was so fast. I stuck with it, but it was a disappointment that Diana Gabaldon would write something like this.

It delivers plenty of humor and quirky people. This is the third Backman book I’ve read, and they were all good. Also, a great story about people carrying their hurtsaround and then having some redemption.

Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

Might have given it 5 except…..
Revisado: 02-18-23
Did not like the ending. The author seem to go for the shock affect with the collector, who wanted some extinct species bones re-articulated in certain fashion. Really?!! Why was that necessary? It added absolutely nothing to the story. Frankly, it is gross. Didn’t like the ending with Theo. But the author was trying to make a point. She definitely had an “axe to grind” about racism. I don’t care what color you are, you shouldn’t be jogging at night in a black hoodie in Rock Creek Park, Washington DC, or any place. I really think the author was trying to push her personal agenda. It was a great book until the ending. Enjoyed the historical aspects of horse racing and breeding in the 1800s.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Quirky - Highly Recommend
Revisado: 02-10-23
Quirky, at times funny, sad and infuriating. A sad, but telling review of how women were treated in the 60s especially if they chose a STEM field to pursue. We weren’t considered smart enough, tough enough, analytical enough, etc. etc. however, the story isn’t totally about that. There’s such a human component, and in the end, it is a love story. The author handles all the subjects quite well, in my opinion. You do have to endure a few F bombs, and a couple of GD’s along the way but it’s still an awesome story.
