Historia
The City of Inventions, Pallass, is a fascinating place. Filled with all kinds of oddballs from the named-rank [Alchemist], Saliss of Lights, to Grimalkin the [Sinew Magus], a drunken Dwarven master [Blacksmith], to Chaldion, to... Wyverns? Erin Solstice is on a break from her inn. Not for long; she's returning with more Skills, but she has changed. She will return with her usual chaos and wonder, but always differently. Now, there are flames and... a garden?

I always like this series. However, like others, I am getting tired of Erin's lack of common sense. She needs to stop and think before she speaks. Seriously. But I loved the new Drakes we were introduced to and would love to try a wyvern steak.

The Best Battle!
Revisado: 04-27-25
This book had me riveted for nearly 2 hours, sure that people I had grown to love - and a few I didn't think I cared about - weren't going to make it. Death is definitely a thing and this author doesn't shy away from that kind of thing. That's another reason I love this series!

From childhood to the events that shape his manhood…and how his journey with Phèdre to avert the conquest of Terre D’Ange shattered body and mind. And brought him a perfect love that he will do anything to keep.

Emotional Nostalgia
Revisado: 08-09-23
I wasn't sure at first, but it was as well written as any of her other books set in Terre D'Ange. I loved having things we already know about seen from the perspective of another person who was part of them. I liked hearing the (extraordinary) mythos Carey created told from another viewpoint. It's fun because as descriptive as she is, the character's voice comes through as his own and not a rehash of the other stories.

I LOVE this series!
Revisado: 03-09-23
Ever since I stumbled on the first three books in this series, I've gotten every book as soon as it comes out. I love the world building and the more we learn about the past, the more intriguing it becomes! I hate bugs, but the idea of gigantic bugs is so much fun!
This book is more of the same. The characters are well rounded and so vivid! Saskia does such a superb job of bringing them all to life. The author has outdone himself. I wait (only a little impatiently) for the next book in the series.
No spoilers, but the last hour or so had me on the edge of my seat! Brilliant!

A Good Start
Revisado: 12-14-21
After listening to another series by this author and loving it, I decided to give this one a go.
For an author's very first novel, this was really good! It was full of action and suspense, with solid characters. I enjoyed it, although it was not as unforgettable as the other books. Having had some small discourse with the author, I know that the story doesn't find its feet until book 2, so I'm definitely interested in moving forward with it. It reminded me just a little bit of The Dresden Files.
The narrator, Nick Podehl was as impressive as always! He does such amazing voice work!
I would recommend this book, however do remember it's the very first published work of the author, so it's not as polished as some of his later works.

Historia
Less than three months have passed since Captain Charlotte Omandi and the crew of Earth’s first starship, the TSS Bladerunner, narrowly prevented an extinction-level event from wiping out humanity. Omandi knows Earth remains on borrowed time, until she meets with leaders of the Galactic Confederation to convince them that our planet no longer represents a threat. As she and her crew prepare to become the first humans to travel outside our solar system, a string of assassination attempts lead them to an unlikely mystery.

Exceptionally Excellent!
Revisado: 12-08-21
First, I cannot say enough about how great a narrator Nick Podehl is! He does accents so fluidly it's as if he *is* that character. It reminds me a lot of how Tatiana Maslany portrays her characters in such a way that you can almost forget they are played by one person. Not only does this bring the Characters to life, but also the story as a whole.
As for that story, I don't have enough words. Engrossing, original, emotional, tense, hilarious... The list goes on and on. My only criticism was that it seemed to take forever for the story to really begin, even though there was action from the start. They spent so much time at Earth that I had to wonder how long it would take for them to get where they had to go. Not that I needed to worry, as soon as things got moving, it was like a perpetual motion machine. When it was over, I was left thirsty for more.
I don't normally write reviews, even on books I really enjoy. It also takes a lot for me to recommend a book to people. I think I've done it maybe 3 or 4 time in total. In this case, though, as soon as I finished book 1, I went on my social media to share and talk up this series. I haven't read anything else by this author, yet, but I feel like I will in the very near future.

Historia
In 2004, Doctor Damien Howard's 131st birthday celebration took an unexpected turn. His personal SETI project detected an extraterrestrial signal directed at Earth. Unfortunately, Dr. Howard's long-hoped-for communication contained a message of dire warning rather than greeting. In 1945, humanity had become a species of galactic interest and was given 100 years to address the issue.

Excellent Story and Narration
Revisado: 11-29-21
I adored this book! It was a fun and funny story with awesome characters. If I had read this book instead of listening to it, I would still have adored it. With Nick as the narrator, it really comes to life! He does amazing voices for each character and makes it sound like they are all really there. It is so great! For anyone who like Sci-fi and great, witty dialogue, I cannot recommend this book enough. I can't wait for the next one.

New stories from The Dresden Files! This anthology is at once a relief and a tease. The full cast audio is fantastic - James Marsters doing a fabulous job, as always - and the different voices for other characters is a welcome addition. Now, if only we had some real information on Peace Talks...

My Favourite Book, Poor Choice of Narrator
Revisado: 03-16-17
This book is great to read. Audio not so much. The narrator sounds much too girly for the character, who is an over 40, PTSD suffering survivor. Not only does the pitch and tone of the narrator not jive with the dark humour of this book, but she also seems almost gleeful, instead of the tired, sarcastic, self-deprecated voice of the main character. The narrator also does not, in my opinion, work all that hard at voice differentiation for the other characters, either. I have longed for an audio of this book for years, only to be disappointed. I will still read my hard copy of the book, though.
