Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

The world of Gamache renewed !
Revisado: 12-13-24
The Grey Wolf marks a return of Penny’s style that blended humor and levity with complicated plot lines, interesting character development and great detective work. The roll back in age of the central characters allows them increased agility and athletic stamina. At the same time, Jean Guy and Isabelle are consummate professionals and teammates with their boss Gamache. The new narrator /performer adds dimension and dramatic interest , with his Québécois accent rendering all French names and nouns with engaging authenticity.
Penny offers a mature writing depth in this book, a welcome change from the previous deeply dark, unrelentingly disturbing works in the series. It’s a page turner!

Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Spellbinding storyteller
Revisado: 12-07-24
Verghese brings historical notes to this novel in ways that inform the reader of characters cultural practices and beliefs, their choices, actions, and motives. His ability to describe landscape and juxtapose it with characters moving the plot line is engaging and invites nuanced appreciation of interior landscape within his characters. Compelling with excellent performance by the author as narrator.

Rewarding read
Revisado: 05-25-24
The familiar connection to landscape found in the series provides an anchor to the character development and unfolding plot as Chee, Manuelito & Leaphorn travel through open country, dawn, dusk, remote homesteads, cities, towns & restaurants. Hillerman’s gift at conveying complex emotions weave a compelling tale that brings the reader to heartfelt gratitude for friendship, Navajo values and way of life.

Historia
At a moonlit Indian ruin where "thieves of time" ravage sacred ground in the name of profit, a noted anthropologist vanishes while on the verge of making a startling, history-altering discovery. Amid stolen goods and desecrated bones, two corpses are discovered, shot by bullets fitting the gun of the missing scientist. There are modern mysteries buried in despoiled ancient places, and Navajo Tribal Policemen Leaphorn and Chee must plunge into the past to unearth an astonishing truth and a cold-hearted killer.

Best yet in the Hillerman series! The weave of Navaho culture throughout along with its expression of connection to the landscape and Hillerman’s ability to convey a lot with spare prose held this reader in rapt attention throughout!

Historia
Three shotgun blasts rip through the side of Officer Jim Chee's trailer as the Navajo Tribal Policeman sleeps. He survives, but the inexplicable attack has raised disturbing questions about a lawman once beyond reproach. Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn wonders why Chee was a target and what connection the assault has to a series of gruesome murders that has been plaguing the reservation. But the investigation is leading them both into a nightmare of ritual, witchcraft, and blood . . . and into the dark and mystical domain of evil beings of Navajo legend, the "skinwalkers."

Landscape, Reader & Hillerman
Revisado: 10-17-23
Skinwalker gets another 5 star trio from me because there are so many layers to the story.
Hillerman’s use of landscape description to convey Chee and Leaphorn’s connection to land and culture informs the reader of their way of thinking as it moves the story plot along. Guiddall’s reading brings the book to life. I appreciate Hillerman’s ability to wrap up the thriller in fewer pages, allowing the reader to pick up the next book in short order.

Historia
An old man's hazy memory and a Polaroid snapshot are all Chee has to go on, but they are enough to send him deep into an underworld of murder and revenge when a shootout erupts between two strangers at the Shiprock Wash-O-Mat. One man dies, and the other drives off but not before showing old Joseph Joe a photograph of the man he is looking for. It's not much of a lead for Sergeant Chee, but it's enough to put him on the killer's trail.

Revisado: 10-01-23
This story has lots of plot twists that the reader Guidall conveys expertly. He is a great match for Hillerman’s writing style and brings the Navajo culture to the reader with deft articulation of descriptive passages as well as Chee’s way of solving the mystery. Couldn’t put this one down until finished !!

Revisado: 09-28-23
The reader brings this Hillerman thriller to life with nuanced intonation. The plot has many twists that could either keep a reader’s interest or lose it. The many customs of the Navajo shared, the fabulous descriptions of place, the sad story of the killer’s wounded spirit together with the crazy murderous scheme create a substantive read. Loved this one!

Historia
For Sergeant Jim Chee of the Navajo Tribal Police, the case begins when he finds a pair of boots in the rabbit brush beside a wilderness trail. The boots' owner lies nearby, his palms and soles "scalped" in what appears to be a witch's scavenging. The federal investigators tell Chee to mind his own business. But a series of disturbing events draws Chee into a dangerous web of intrigue spun by Navajo sorcery and white greed.

Historia
Homicide is always an abomination, but there is something exceptionally disturbing about the victim discovered in a high, lonely place: a corpse with a mouth full of sand, abandoned at a crime scene seemingly devoid of tracks or useful clues. Though it goes against his better judgment, Navajo tribal police lieutenant Joe Leaphorn cannot help but suspect the hand of a supernatural killer.

Hillerman takes the reader into the The Blessing Way with all the usual intrigue and plot twists of a fast moving thriller mystery. Especially interesting is the author’s use of multiple perspectives that lead the reader to constantly question and wonder about what is real.
The descriptions of the landscape, the cast of characters and theme of fragmented traditions in contemporary culture make for a great read.
