Another author who should not narrate his own book

The subject is fascinating, the writing is good, but the author/narrator has an annoying habit of shifting to a very nasal voice when quoting someone or some reference. It gets in the way of enjoying what is otherwise a very interesting read. The breathing exercises included at the end, which are introduced by Anders Olson, are very good, and his voice is easy to like.

Intellectually honest

Pinker argues in the best way possible, by framing opposing viewpoints generously in their best light and then taking them apart piece by piece. His explanation of the intellectual roots of Trumpism is a good example. This is a masterful, articulate examination of our time, presented by the perfect narrator. It doesn’t get better than this.

Deeply disappointing

This book was badly in need of a good editor. It was so full of insignificant details that I gave up after 7 hours, convinced that my time is better spent. Why do I need to know that Oppenheimer's wife's second husband died after being shot in the groin during the Spanish Civil War? Maybe I've just been spoiled reading biographies by Meacham, Isaacson, McCoullough and Chernow, but this was clearly not in the same league. Why it was awarded the Pulitzer is a complete puzzle and can only be explained by the fascinating character that Oppenheimer clearly was, not by the writing. The narration was only passable.

Another unfortunate author narrator

I found the content engaging and the science both unexpected and useful. And I’ve seen the author speak in other contexts and he is likable and stimulating. But his voice is not pleasant and if I heard another EKSETERA my brain would explode.

Try slowing the speed to understand his speech

This is interesting material, but delivered with a pace that makes it difficult just to understand, much less comprehend. The professor has a delivery that often races through short phrases, leaving me tempted to return the series without finishing it. I managed to get through it but only by slowing the speed to 90% of the original.

Flowers for Algernon reimagined for our time

The performance is superb. The story is good, but there are many loose ends that never get resolved, and left me wondering why the author introduced them in the first place. It's a relatively short listen that didn't really engage me until about chapter 26, but it was ultimately worth it.
