Now, because she believes she is dying, Helen wants to expose all that has been concealed, when she decides to celebrate the Chinese New Year by unburdening herself of everybody's hidden truths - her own and Winnie's, as well as the dreadful news that Winnie's daughter, Pearl, has been keeping from her mother.

Sad, Sad and more Sadness
Revisado: 05-07-24
I like historical fiction. This is maybe 10% historical and 90% abuse, (physical and mental) rape and bad situations. I have 4 hours left and I'm not sure I can finish. It's graphic in is descriptions of abuse against women and children. It starts with a Chinese family in the current day in the United States. It then goes into the memories of the mother and what she went through in the war with Japan in the 1930's. She is married to an abusive man. It describes how women were treated in these relationships. Important to know but 10 hours later I'm feeling battered myself and wonder at the graphic slog that I'm enduring for entertainment.
The narration is rough as well. I'm sure it's a skill that is hard to master but this is rough. The main voice is good but as others come in they are hard to listen to.

For decades — in China and in San Francisco — Winnie Louie and Helen Kwong have kept each other's confidences, but those secrets are about to be revealed. Convinced that she is dying, Helen decides to celebrate the Chinese New Year by unburdening herself of hidden truths — not only hers, but those of Winnie and of Winnie's daughter, Pearl.

Historia
Tom and Charlie are living out what's left of their lives on their own terms in a remote forest, two pot growers their only connection to the outside world. But then two women arrive - a photographer on the trail of survivors of a decades-ago forest fire and an elderly escapee from a psychiatric institution - and everything changes. And the Birds Rained Down, the recipient of several prizes, is a haunting meditation on aging and self-determination.

Unique
Revisado: 03-18-24
I'm always searching for a unique story. One that is interesting to listen to and somewhat, even loosely based on history. Not predictable or keen to upset or thrill. This is that story. Sad at times but the characters are wonderful and I enjoyed it very much.

Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

Not as described - be aware!
Revisado: 03-15-24
This book was described as a murder mystery. There is the mothers anguish that is well written but half of the book is about gender transition and the agenda it pushes. At one point in the book it went into a discussion about how to define the word "woman" "Is a woman a person with a uterus? Well, some people have their uterus removed so that must not be it".....seriously. I have been miss lead into buying this book. Thought I was buying a murder mystery, instead I got an agenda to something that is attacking women at their core. And diluting the beauty of women.

Painful Lovely Ranting Beautiful
Revisado: 04-15-22
The book starts with an intriguing story line with some beautiful writing “she learned from experience that need was a warehouse that could accommodate a considerable amount of cruelty”. Sometimes funny in a lightly sardonic way but then a character appears that goes on a rant that seems more about satisfying the writer than staying within the story. It’s as if we take a hard left turn and wonder when we will find the road again. Writers prerogative and is mind numbing in a ranting sort of way where you start to wonder what the point was in the first place.
Then the book moves to a new character, rant, pain and I wonder where this is going again.
It will take willpower to finish. But I keep listening, hoping for a respite from the rant to the intriguing.
I like to listen to books two and three times in a row to really get the fullness of the story. If I do with this one it will not be “from cover to cover”. I will skip around.

Historia
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

I saw the Netfilx Series and wanted to read the book. I stuck with it because of the story but the narrator is hard to listen to and a few times it was very distracting but the story was worth it.

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Wanted to like this more
Revisado: 06-08-18
I wanted to like this more. Love the idea of the book. That's why I bought it. Such opportunity for insight but the book ended up detailing a couples inability to get along. If I had been on this trip I may have taken my chances on my own rather than listen to them constantly bicker through a once in a life time adventure. Too bad. Missed opportunity for a great story. I found that I had to force myself to finish it. One reviewer wrote that it was funny, a few spots were genuinely funny but overall the humor is very sarcastic which over time leaves a bad taste. Would not recommend it.
