If you’re interested in true crime or enjoy learning about serial killers (not that Ed Gein is one, necessarily), you’ll enjoy this book. The details were fantastic and it reads like a novel. Though I’ve researched Gein in the past, I found myself learning new things in this book. Every bit of Gein’s insanity is on display here — including every last gory detail of the findings in his house and on his property. The psychological analysis of how and why Gein came to do what he did is thorough and interesting. It is excellently narrated as well.

I have always thought of “good ol’ JR” as something of a square, but this book changed my mind. His stories of childhood and growing up are quaint and interesting, as is his entry into the wrestling world. Very interesting to hear about his dedication to the sport as well as his stories of working with the old guard. Growing up as an Attitude era kid, I’ve always associated JR with WWE, but loved to learn about how he actually came to work for Vince later in his career. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to learn more about JR or the wrestling business. And of course, hearing it all in his familiar voice makes it that much better.

Wow. I swore this story must have been written by a militant lesbian, but I am wrong in that regard. It started out alright, enjoyable, but the main character begins to wear on you pretty quick. She comes across as less of a strong heroine and more of an annoying brat.
The performances weren’t bad, and it worked well as audio theatre, but the story is where the shortcomings really appear. As many of the other reviews attest, this story is full of nothing but women who have been screwed over by filthy, disgusting men. There is only a single redeemable male character. While there are grains of truth in the poor way Victorian women were treated, it is simply unbelievable that the men must have been consistently evil-minded. The point is hammered and hammered at, over and over, until it becomes difficult to continue with the story.
Unless you’re feeling like, quite frankly, an overdose of “girl power”, skip this one.

Chris Jericho is truly one of wrestling’s greatest treasures. This is the first book of his that I’ve listened to/read, and I will absolutely get all the rest after this. I laughed out loud countless times — if you’re a fan of Jericho on the mic, you will find his voice to be echoed here in this book. His analogies, similes and references are just fantastic — my favorite must have been when one of his entrance theme songs “fell flatter than Miley Cyrus’ ass”. The narrator was perfect (with a few exceptions of mispronunciations on names), but his impressions had me laughing almost as much as the book itself. Jericho comes across as a pompous diva, but you can’t even blame him. He truly is one of the best, if not THE best.

I stumbled across this book after stumbling across Millais’ name while listening to a Great Courses audio about the Victorian era. The story did not disappoint. While John Ruskin was a cornerstone of Victorian history, you’ll certainly learn to see him in a different light after learning of his treatment to his wife. Effie herself is the portrait of a Victorian lady, and the story of her and her family is engrossing and touching. Beautifully narrated by Sophie Ward. I highly recommend this story to anyone with an interest in Victorian history.

Very basic Poe bio

Seeing as this was one of few Poe bios available on Audible, I chose this book to listen just for the fun of it. It is a quick overview of his life and works, and makes a great intro for someone newly delving into Poe. I have read another biography of Poe before, so this one really felt like a skimming of the surface for me. It was enjoyable, however, to hear a different take on the classic author by a different source. The narrator had a way of reading quotes which came across as silly to me, using a faint-sounding, breathless, “woe is me” type of voice, but aside from that, he was interesting to hear speak.

This is the second Kate Morton book I’ve finished and I will be purchasing all of her books! This one and the other that I read (The Forgotten Garden) are both incredibly sweet, with elements of mystery, romance and a hint of melancholy. I love the flashbacks to the Victorian era and finding how the stories of generations between then and now have interwoven — and we get to find out how! You always think you’ve got it figured out at first, but her twists and turns will literally make you gasp. The narrator is wonderful as well, with a pleasant voice and slight change of pitch to differentiate characters. Another reviewer wrote that this is a difficult story to follow and that she took notes to keep track of the characters, which worried me about purchasing this title — but I did not find it necessary in the end. You will want to pay close attention and not let your mind drift off, but the characters are memorable enough to keep them all straight, though there are quite a few involved. Highly recommend this book!!!

There was an incredible amount of information brought to life by Professor Garland, who puts you in the shoes of different people across all space and time. My single complaint is that Garland does have a lisp which I nearly found intolerable at the start. I found the content so absorbing that eventually I was able not to forget it, but to ignore it.
