So many books seem like they are written by ChatGPT prompts (lifeless) but this rollicking madcap action story showed a love of great turns of phrases and “moments.” Plus it was just damned fun to listen to.

I liked the characters, their quirks and their story arcs. The voice actors were excellent, especially Rebekkah Ross’s ability to voice completely different characters.

Unfortunately there are no sex scenes, only fade to black implied ones. Or fortunately depending on your preferences.

Also, I’m going to have to overcome my aversion to poetry and go read me some Walt Whitman. They included some lines from “When I Heard at the Close of the Day” and I had no idea this poet I thought of as a pompous old white guy was so poignantly sensuous. They way it was read - I really ‘got’ it. Thanks for that!

Also - producers and especially directors of audiobooks get little praise but I think all the choices they made were good. Voices were clear and pacing was good and the character’s’ emotions came through. (Though I always listen at 1.2 speed- I’m pretty sure they 1.0 & 1.1 speeds are always slightly slower than the original. )

All in all both thumbs up👍👍

May I also recommend Brynn Kelly’s “You Only Die Twice .”

Everything was just ‘ok.’ It wasn’t the worst romance I’ve read but it also wasn’t very good.

Plot: meh
Dialogue: very meh
Spice: non existent
Narrator: not bad but not a fan

I can’t remember if I paid money for this but if I did it wasn’t worth it. Certainly don’t waste a whole credit on it.

Cringe worthy in so many places. I don’t even know where to begin. I listened to the end so you don’t have to.

What even is this story? It could have embraced its telenovella aspirations, with maybe an estranged evil twin or someone back from the dead, for fun a tongue in cheek tale. The author could have tried to make it funnier - a lively farce. Or more realistic. Whatever. As it is, it’s a confusing mishmash.

The originating premise is never explained - how could an unrelated woman be allowed into a famous person’s hospital room? It goes downhill from there. The conniving ex-fiancée’s machinations and her posse are so outlandishly Evil (™) that it’s just stupid. Since this takes place over several months surely a PR team would have stepped in and put an end to the shenanigans.

But what really makes this book unbearable is the self absorbed, whiny FMC. She always doubts the MMC’s motives and actions. At one particularly crucial point she basically accuses him of doping and lying, a real punch to the gut, and then wonders why he isn’t calling her. Like, hello, FMC?! After all of what’s gone before, you couldn’t see that ex is behind this too? No introspection or internal growth. I wouldn’t have taken her back.

Yet that is what the MMC does. He really deserved more.

This was a well written tale but many parts were difficult to listen to. Especially the first part - the abuse that happened to both main characters was vomit inducing. It very graphically sets up what’s at stake for these two very damaged people.

There is a HEA and lots of feels along the way - but it’s not an easy road.

Ok, sue me, but I loved the aspect of a school for girls that teaches them espionage and also the lead character’s climbing skills though it’s fantastical that such a place and person would exist. I liked that the story was interesting, adventurous AND had a pleasing action:angst ratio. In other words, we didn’t have to listen to several chapters of “I’m not good enough,” though there was a bit - just enough.

The tropes were delightful. The way the students of the “Swooning Virgins Society” poked fun at the gothic romances they read while simultaneously enjoying the hell out of them was chef’s kiss. 😘 It was a clever way to set up the series and

Shout out to the narrator Jessica Bright. I’ll be looking for more of her work.

The female mc was so annoying. I started skipping over parts of her chapters but it didn’t really help.

I usually love a fake marriage trope but this one was so preposterous that I just couldn’t get into it.

Male narrator was good. Female narrator performed the part as it was written, I guess.

I normally don’t read about this age group but this one caught my eye. Many, many moons ago I went to university in a small Texas college town and this story reminded me of how many of us were weirdos/smart kids/creative kids or just plain misfits from other small towns finally flying our freak flags and trying to find our way in life. I could totally see a cast of characters like this. (Small pet peeve- Texans with deep multigenerational roots don’t think of themselves as Southern but maybe the Granma was from somewhere else). Cute story. Good as part of my audible library package.

Characters talking tropes is a kind of sly fourth wall break

Loved the writing, loved the narrators (yay Neva Navarre!) loved the heroine’s story. She felt so like a real person that I bet the author has a friend with some of her quirks. The “not gonna love again, nu-uh no way never” trope can be tedious but was pushed just the right amount. It takes a masterful hand.

But what really worked was the female characters all knowingly joking about tropes that is almost but not quite a fourth wall break. Romcom aficionados will appreciate this like a sly wink and a nudge.

Ok, caveat of everyone grieves differently but…in this fairy tale, a 40+ widow of 3 yrs has a 2nd chance at love with a dreamy older Hollywood heartthrob but CONSTANTLY says oh I’m unworthy, it’s too soon, I can’t bring another man into my almost adult (17yo) daughter’s life…jeez we get it already! So annoying. Fast forwarded thru some of it. Editor could have cut out even 1/3 of that and it would’ve been much better. Maybe the author had a word count target.

Enthralling storytelling

I loved this story of love, loss and middle age reckonings of past betrayals and disappointments. This was the best of the series. The young lovers' story is told in flashbacks that heighten the pain experienced by the disillusioned middle aged former lovers . The starry eyed Pippin met in previous books is now the widowed Lady Knolls, living on rose tinted memories of her dashing young pirate. Lady Knolls is given the chance to reunite with Capt Dash by his son, supposedly to nurse him back to health, only to find in his place a bitter, foul mouthed, brandy soaked sot. Throw in complications from the younger generation, far more staid and shocked by their elders, and the road to reconciliation is fraught indeed.
This would make a great movie - pirates, adventures, romance and daring and coming into your own even later in life.

UPDATE:
I saw that the book was to be deleted from the Plus Catalog so I listened a second time and my god, how it holds up! It was almost better the second time. It had been just enough time that I forgot some details. I decided to purchase it in the future.

And by the way the narrator Susan Duerden is a favorite of mine but I must say she really performed the hell out of this book. So glad it was her narrating.
