Historia
The tellers of Greek myths—historically men—have routinely sidelined the female characters. When they do take a larger role, women are often portrayed as monstrous, vengeful or just plain evil—like Pandora, the woman of eternal scorn and damnation whose curiosity is tasked with causing all the world’s suffering and wickedness when she opened that forbidden box. But, as Natalie Haynes reveals, in ancient Greek myths there was no box. It was a jar . . . which is far more likely to tip over.

BRILLIANT & FUNNY AF! ✨
Listen IMMEDIATELY. This is a queer canon text. It's so good I do not have the words. 💖
I was laughing hysterically in my mask on the metro home listening, a complete queer freak luxuriating in audioscapes of queer ecstasy.🌟
Bravo to Adam Goldman, the writing really shines. I cannot wait to recommend to all my queer fam, and re-listen from season 1. 💯

Historia
When Emily Wilson’s translation of The Odyssey appeared in 2017―rendering the ancient poem in contemporary language that was “fresh, unpretentious and lean” (Madeline Miller, Washington Post)―critics lauded it as “a revelation” (Susan Chira, New York Times) and “a cultural landmark” (Charlotte Higgins, Guardian) that would forever change how Homer is read in English. Now Wilson has returned with an equally revelatory translation of Homer’s other great epic―the most revered war poem of all time.

PUNCHING, GRIPPING NEW TRANSLATION
Revisado: 01-24-24
I love Emily Wilson's translation of the Illiad. The prologue gives you great cultural context, and I loved the section explaining translating the poem. And of course what stands out above all is the grand epic battle of the deathless gods interwoven into mortal warfare. How Emily's prose paints vivid and gripping scenery in action. And Audra Mcdonald is giving EVERYTHING! 10/10 would recommend, glad I purchased, and I look forward to rereading

Historia
Relationships have always been essential to human survival. Our bodies and brains are programmed to seek out connection, whether familial, romantic, or platonic. And yet, these vital bonds are often at the root of our deepest suffering. While our hearts are primed for compassionate connection, our nervous systems—which store all our past hurts and disappointments—are wired for threat and negativity.

Epic Feminist Inversion of Greek Mythology
Revisado: 12-27-23
I love modern Greek mythology retellings like this, similar to Madeline Miller in the painting of a deep interior world. Ariadne taught me a lot, in deepening the original myth and providing nuance to detail that gives the women of these stories agency and power

sublime modern queer love horror masterpiece
Revisado: 11-07-23
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ a SUBLIME masterpiece! Ryan has done it again, I cannot recommend this brilliant, cinematic, brain-clutching book enough.
I am writing this still in a post-read haze of Beholder, one of my favorite books of the year, and as such I can only clack out this review as a series of associative phrases:
Queer Love Story
Cinematic Plotting
Gorgeous Gorgeous Prose
Insane Interior Design
Dark Mirror Mystery
Delicious Dialogue
Pansexual Representation
POV Power
PHENOMENAL LAST LINE
The way the cover is basically the entire book... blows me away. It's so visually striking and resonant, I want a printed poster of the cover to remind me of the fantastic horror adventure contained in Beholder.
I read the audiobook, and HOLY REVERB, the quality of the production and the talent of the voice actor CANNOT be understated. Love love love the way all the different voices are uniquely rendered, even the slight musical touches.
All in all, I'll recommend Beholder to most everyone. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ You'll not regret reading this book! But you'll never see a mirror the same way again.

Historia
Out in the desert in a place called the Palace, a young man tends to a dying soul, someone he once knew briefly, but who has haunted the edges of his life. Juan Gay—playful raconteur, child lost and found and lost, guardian of the institutionalized—has a project to pass along. It is inspired by a true artifact of a book, Sex Variants: A Study in Homosexual Patterns, which contains stories collected in the early twentieth century from queer subjects by a queer researcher, Jan Gay, whose groundbreaking work was then co-opted by a committee, her name buried.

Brilliant Conversational Queer Histories Mystery
Revisado: 10-30-23
WOW— I can't tell you the last time I felt like I read a new form of The Novel. Justin Torres is BRILLIANT, his writing here INCENDIARY, and I will be thinking about this story, the characters, the crossovers with real life, and the monument to queerness this incredible novel shines. The kind of novel that makes ancestors smile and descendants feel a part of the lineage of queer histories, I'm so grateful this book exists. The dynamic conversational cinema! The poetry of it all! I highly recommend this book, the audiobook did an honorable job translating the form, I didn't feel like I missed much, and since the book is so good, I sill feel encouraged to get the physical and see what that reading experience is like, with the blackout poems
