Historia
James Baldwin’s stunning first novel is now an American classic. With startling realism that brings Harlem and the black experience vividly to life, this is a work that touches the heart with emotion while it stimulates the mind with its narrative style, symbolism, and excoriating vision of racism in America. Moving through time from the rural South to the northern ghetto, Baldwin chronicles a 14-year-old boy’s discovery of the terms of his identity as the stepson of the minister of a storefront Pentecostal church in Harlem one Saturday in March of 1935.

Historia
Ralph Elllison's Invisible Man is a monumental novel, one that can well be called an epic of modern American Negro life. It is a strange story, in which many extraordinary things happen, some of them shocking and brutal, some of them pitiful and touching—yet always with elements of comedy and irony and burlesque that appear in unexpected places. It is a book that has a great deal to say and which is destined to have a great deal said about it.

Difficult Novel Not Helped by Reader
Revisado: 01-05-16
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
A Fable, which might be for many an important novel --about soldier resistance to WWI fighting--- is to my mind one of Faulkner's most difficult novels. He spent ten years writing it and got the Pulitzer for it, but he sure doesn't give the reader much help. The pronoun "he" is used so often and so far from the anchoring name that we completely lose track of which "he" is being talked about. The reader doesn't help. Though pronouncing very clearly with a pleasant voice he has a strange arrhythmia: minor words are emphasized with inappropriate pauses, or stresses; a single speech stream is broken into two; vocal emphasis is given to non-emphasized syntax or meaning, Trying to process why this emphasis or that lack of it interferes with the ability to comprehend, much less appreciate. Too bad I can only recommend with warnings, as I'd like to give it much more.

Excellent in all respects
Revisado: 11-22-15
What did you love best about The Rest Is Noise?
A superb combination of history, biography and musical analysis
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Rest Is Noise?
The extent to which the US government, in Germany after WW II, used music to shape the culture away from Aryan extremism.
Which character – as performed by Grover Gardner – was your favorite?
No characters, a nice piece of non-fiction. He's got a great, and well measured voice. Really appreciated it.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Not sure one would be made but how about Jazzing up the Repertory.
Any additional comments?
If you've got half an ear for classical music and haven't caught on to modernism (which is almost 100 years old now) this is the book for you. You'll refer back to it many times.

Excellent but....
Revisado: 03-24-14
Would you consider the audio edition of Time Regained to be better than the print version?
Audio and print complement each other. I enjoy both
What was one of the most memorable moments of Time Regained?
Madame Verdurain carrying on about her salons as if the war weren't raging miles away. What an ear Proust has!
What about Neville Jason’s performance did you like?
Excellent all the way through.
Any additional comments?
It is terrible that Audible does not see fit to acknowledge the translator of non-English books! Proust wrote in French. Neville Jason reads in impeccable English. Who translated this? There are many translations and all serious readers want to know who has done the work, and when. I have searched high and low at Audible and Naxos and found nothing. A disgrace, if not actionable....

Historia
A father's murder sets the stage for a riveting tale of intrigue and passion that also explores profound issues of faith and ethics. This classic novel - considered Dostoevsky's finest work - tells the story of crazed landowner Fyodor Karamazov and his four sons - Dmitry, Ivan, Alyosha, and the illegitimate Smerdyakov. Fyodor's murder sets the stage for a complex tangle of moral and ethical struggles that involve patricide, betrayal, sacrifice, and glory.

Don't Buy This
Revisado: 04-05-13
What disappointed you about The Brothers Karamazov?
My goodness, that an actress could read so poorly and her director and editors let it pass is a big disappointment
And, I must have missed that it was an abridged version. Argh! Don't do this with the great classics
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Brothers Karamazov?
I had to stop listening
What didn’t you like about Debra Winger’s performance?
Wooden, mono-stress, one word at a time reading, not honoring comma pauses much less full stops.
Any additional comments?
Get a good reader and do an unabridged version. Thanks

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Maybe, depending on what she wanted out of Proust
What did you like best about this story?
It's Proust. 'nuff said
What about Neville Jason’s performance did you like?
Excellent reader. Multiple dialects and proper emphasis
Do you think Time Regained needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
It's the last of a 7 volume series; I don't think so
Any additional comments?
Those who listen to or read Proust aren't the sort who want Cliff Notes, or abridgements. Please, get Mr Jason back to work and give us the whole thing!
Please, please please. Proust wrote in French, not English. It is a crime not to tell us who the translator is. There are multiple translations and it matters. It really does. If we circulated Naxos or Audible work and stripped attribution from it we would be sued. If I were the translator of this version of Time Regained, I would have my lawyer write to Naxos and Audible until my name were restored as the translator.

In The Guermantes Way, Part 1, the third volume of Marcel Proust's monumental, seven volume Remembrance of Things Past, Marcel penetrates the inner sanctum of Paris high society and falls in love with the fascinating Duchesse de Guermantes. With his unmatched powers of observation Proust vividly describes the struggles for political, social, and sexual supremacy played out beneath a veneer of elegant manners.

Unabridge it, Please!
Revisado: 02-02-12
What did you like best about The Guermantes Way, Part 1? What did you like least?
What is read is fine, but an awful lot has been left out. Seems like those interested in Proust at all would be interested in all of Proust. Leave the abridging for those books which won't suffer from it.
If you’ve listened to books by Marcel Proust before, how does this one compare?
Delighted by the first two; this one less. In fact, the abridgement makes me think twice about getting the next volume, also abridged.
What about Neville Jason’s performance did you like?
It was fine. Good range of voices; perhaps over Anglicizing some of them. It is, after all France, not England,we are hearing about....
Do you think The Guermantes Way, Part 1 needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Offer the whole book.

Historia
In the small coastal city of Oran, Algeria, rats begin rising up from the filth, only to die as bloody heaps in the streets. Shortly after, an outbreak of the bubonic plague erupts and envelops the human population. Albert Camus' The Plague is a brilliant and haunting rendering of human perseverance and futility in the face of a relentless terror born of nature.

Translator Please!
Revisado: 06-04-11
Please please list the translator for books that come from other languages. Who did the translation and when makes an enormous difference in what we are reading! It is hard to make a choice without this knowledge.
In this case it is Stuart Gilbert, done in 1947 just as it was released in French. He renewed the copyright in 1975, presumably with some changes. But there is also a 2002 version by Robin Buss edited by Tony Judt -- so please, help us out here!
