This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

Powerful!
Revisado: 04-25-25
It’s been so long since I read a Steinbeck novel; it won’t be long before I pick up another one.
The characters have such depth, and though the prose wasn’t as powerful as say The Grapes of Wrath, it was beautiful.
I’m definitely putting this book on my reading list, as the characters deserve to be studied and appreciated.

Great action thriller
Revisado: 03-15-25
The author captured me from the get go. Picture a novel, the brain child of Tom Clancy and Tess Gerritsin, and you’ll grasp something of what moved me. The protagonist is a microbiologist with a background in the Army. He’s chosen to devote the remainder of his life to medical research and has been nestled beneath the wing of a minor god in the field. This demigod just happens to be a radical environmentalist—and a sociopath.
I won’t ruin the story, but it’s worth your time. I promise.

Historia
When a woman unexpectedly loses her lifelong best friend and mentor, she finds herself burdened with the unwanted dog he has left behind. Her own battle against grief is intensified by the mute suffering of the dog, a huge Great Dane traumatized by the inexplicable disappearance of its master, and by the threat of eviction: Dogs are prohibited in her apartment building. While others worry that grief has made her a victim of magical thinking, the woman refuses to be separated from the dog except for brief periods of time.

A shocker
Revisado: 03-01-25
At first this novella struck me as meandering and lacking substance. I was wrong. It delves the depths of relationships, both human and canine, and offers some poignant observations regarding why and how we love. It was very much worth my time, and I suspect it will remain with me for a very long time.

Historia
In 1943, when a frail old white woman shows up in Red Clay, Alabama, at the home of a Black former slave—on the morning following his funeral—his family hardly knows what to expect after she utters the words “… a lifetime ago, my family owned yours.” Adelaide Parker has a story to tell—one of ambition, betrayal, violence, and redemption—that shaped both the fate of her family and that of the late Felix H. Parker. But there are gaps in her knowledge, and she’s come to Red Clay seeking answers from a family with whom she shares a name and a history that neither knows in full.

Great book!

I enjoyed this book more than any I’ve heard (or read) in quite some time. The characters are incredibly well drawn, and the tension so genuine, I became lost in it.
I highly recommend it.

Revisado: 02-09-25
I’ve enjoyed Robert Parker’s fiction for years, but this is nothing like what I’d become accustomed to. Quite honestly, I’m not a fan of women’s fiction. So why was Parker’s name attached to this?

Historia
It is 1947 when Joseph Burke, ex-Marine, ex-husband, ex-somebody–is hired as a bodyguard to protect Lauren Roach, 25 and spoiled rotten. The unlikely duo becomes entangled with Burke’s boyhood hero, color-barrier breaking baseball player Jackie Robinson, in a story that is both thrilling and engaging. It is in the historical character Jackie Robinson that Mr. Parker finds inspiration and Joseph Burke may find his redemption. This is a work of fiction about a real man. Most of what I’ve written I’ve made up. I have, however, attempted to render Jackie Robinson accurately. As he was, or as I imagined him to be, in 1947, when I was turning 15, and he was changing the world. The rest is altogether fiction. It may be more Burke’s story then Jackie’s story. But, without Jackie, Burke would have had no story. And neither would I. Robert B Parker.

A good read
Revisado: 11-22-24
While I enjoyed the book and appreciated the writing, it strained believability. The 19th Century characters were burdened with 21st Century sensibilities while the evils of slavery were embellished. I prefer Twain’s, I think.

Exceptional book!
Revisado: 10-25-24
While broken chronologies generally fall flat, this one was outstanding. The story was powerful, and it was beautifully written. What’s more, the characters were so well done, I scarcely see how any reader/listener won’t find them compelling. Most significantly, I forgave the author’s apparent dislike of a few things I passionately support. That takes some great writing!

Though I’m usually drawn to more stylized narrative, the storyline is so powerful that the absence of style in this book didn’t bother me. It’s an incredible story.
