Historia
In recent years, Christians everywhere are rediscovering the Jewish roots of their faith. Every year at Easter time, many believers now celebrate Passover meals (known as Seders) seeking to understand exactly what happened at Jesus' final Passover, the night before he was crucified. Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist shines fresh light on the Last Supper by looking at it through Jewish eyes.

Very educational - even for a Protestant
Revisado: 10-17-24
I don’t know that a non-Christian would find this interesting, but I heartily recommend it for any Christian interested in learning more about the Lord’s Supper. Even though I’m a Protestant and don’t believe in transubstantiation, I found the book fascinating, well reasoned, and well written. I learned a ton and will definitely look for other books by this author.

Historia
The 1960 presidential election between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon is one of the most frequently described political events of the 20th century, yet the accounts to date have been remarkably unbalanced. Far more attention is given to Kennedy's side than to Nixon's.

Too focused on hating Kennedy to have much educational value.
Revisado: 07-28-24
This book gets way too wrapped up in exposing all of JFK’s misdeeds. Granted, the author appears to be trying to point out the things the press didn’t report during the presidential campaign, but the continuous stream of anti-Kennedy stuff gets old.
I’m no great fan of Kennedy (in fact, I’m a Republican), but I don’t enjoy listening to laundry lists of negativity about anyone. I was reading this to learn about history and not to hear about every time Kennedy watched an adult film or lied about his medical issues.
Unless you really hate Kennedy and want to hear someone pile on, I would not recommend this book

Short, but Robert Caro is unparalleled
Revisado: 07-21-24
Charging a credit for this is kind of ridiculous given how short it js, but I enjoyed every second of it nonetheless. Robert Caro is perhaps the best author I’ve ever read, and I really enjoyed the fact that he read this one. Substance and narration deserve 5 stars, but the price-to-duration ratio knocks the overall purchase to 4 stars.

Historia
Hard times come for all in life, with no real explanation. When we walk through suffering, it has the potential to devastate and destroy, or to be the gateway to gratitude and joy. Elisabeth Elliot was no stranger to suffering. Her first husband, Jim, was murdered by the Waoroni people in Ecuador moments after he arrived in hopes of sharing the gospel. Her second husband was lost to cancer. Yet, it was in her deepest suffering that she learned the deepest lessons about God.

I bought this book based on the reviews (and my general love of biographies/ history books), and I’m so glad I did. Each chapter is a different autobiographical story that not only provides insight into modern American history but also makes you brought to be an America and serves as an inspirational lesson about life in general. I will definitely look for other books by this author.

Historia
Why do people race in Ironmans? Only a person whose good sense was severely impaired would decide to do a race marked by such agony and suffering - a race that makes no sense to normal people. Russell Newell would find out when he signed up for the second oldest Ironman in the country: Lake Placid, in the idyllic Upstate New York village nestled in the Adirondacks. Russell would then question his sanity and test his resolve as he attempted to finish the 2018 Ironman Lake Placid...despite almost drowning, crashing on his bike, and more.

I couldn’t stop listening to this! It’s similar to autobiographies by comedians - funny, educational, entertaining, and inspiring. I knew nothing about the author or Iron Man competition before reading this, but I’m glad I took a chance on it. A quick, lighthearted, funny read.

Historia
Widely respected as a civil libertarian, legal educator, and defense attorney extraordinaire, Alan M. Dershowitz has also been a passionate though not uncritical supporter of Israel. In this audiobook, he presents an ardent defense of Israel's rights, supported by indisputable evidence. Dershowitz takes a close look at what Israel's accusers and detractors are saying about this war-torn country. He accuses those who attack Israel of international bigotry and backs up his argument with hard facts.

Worthwhile read; formatted as an argument rather than a history
Revisado: 01-07-24
I had hoped more facts and figures would be included, but it is in the format of a persuasive argument rather than a historical account. Still an informative and worthwhile book.
The narrator is good and easy to understand. However, it would have been better if the quoted segments (in which the author is quoting an argument made by a particular person) had been distinguished more clearly.

Martin Gilbert presents a comprehensive look into the series of decisions that helped shape this particular course of the war, and the fate of millions of people, through his eminent blend of exhaustive devotion to the facts and accessible, graceful writing. Through firsthand accounts by escaped Auschwitz prisoners, Gilbert reconstructs the span of time between Allied awareness and definitive action in the face of overwhelming evidence of Nazi atrocities.

Revisado: 01-04-24
Interesting, thorough, and very sad. It definitely gave me food for thought regarding how people (even well-intentioned people) can overlook evil or disbelieve it as too far-fetched.
The writing style isn’t the best out there (i.e., it’s not quite Robert Caro level), but it’s pretty darn good (4/5). I really appreciate the thoroughness and factual detail. Worth reading if you’re interested in understanding WW2 and the Holocaust.

Historia
We live in a distracted, secular age. These two trends define life in Western society today. We are increasingly addicted to habits - and devices - that distract and "buffer" us from substantive reflection and deep engagement with the world. And we live in what Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor calls "a secular age" - an age in which all beliefs are equally viable and real transcendence is less and less plausible. Drawing on Taylor's work, Alan Noble describes how these realities shape our thinking and affect our daily lives.

Well written and thought-provoking, but not Noble’s best
Revisado: 12-30-23
This book is very well-written and thought-provoking. I think the title is misleading, though - although the book is somewhat about evangelism, it’s more about the mindset, assumptions, and modus operandi that we (and the modern world around us) bring to Christianity and how that skews our view of the centrality of God.
Although this is definitely worth reading, I prefer Noble’s book On Getting Out of Bed. If you only have one credit or only have time to read one of Noble’s books, I’d recommend that one instead.

In Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu’s New York Times bestselling autobiography, the prime minister of Israel tells the story of his family, his path to leadership, and his unceasing commitment to defending his country and securing its future. Through a host of vivid anecdotes, he narrates his own evolution from soldier to statesman, while providing a unique perspective on leadership, the fraught geopolitics of the Middle East, and his successful efforts to liberate Israel’s economy, which helped turn it into a global powerhouse of technological innovation.

First half is excellent; second half not so much
Revisado: 11-05-23
I’m generally a fan of Netanyahu, as I suspect most people are who purchase this book.
The first half of the book was exactly what I had hoped: interesting background information about Netanyahu’s childhood and experiences before he got into politics.
The second half of the book, though, was mostly him criticizing his opponents and justifying his political decisions. Even though I agreed with him on many of his criticisms and decisions, it came across as a bit whiney at times, not to mention shortsighted given how many of the criticized world leaders he has to continue working with to this day. More importantly, the second half of the book wasn’t the informative biography that I’d hoped; I felt like I was watching a political speech or press conference.
