Historia
Tech billionaires have decided that they should determine our futures for us. According to Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Sam Altman, and more, the only good future for humanity is one powered by technology: trillions of humans living in space, functionally immortal, served by superintelligent AIs. In More Everything Forever, science writer Adam Becker investigates these wildly implausible and often profoundly immoral visions of tomorrow—and shows why, in reality, there is no good evidence that they will, or should, come to pass.

Puts words to thoughts that have been haunting me
Revisado: 04-24-25
Adam Becker nails it: clarifying mindsets that have felt unknowable and impossible to understand, revealing consistencies across different movements that might feel disconnected (until you look deeper), and substantiating major areas of concern that too often I felt were "just me." And he does it with colorful, accessible, fact-backed storytelling that brings some big pictures into focus. I'm recommending this book widely and hope you will too.

Historia
Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy, and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic, and domestic life of a forty-five-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectation while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman.

Historia
From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, this searing memoir exposes both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative where a few people carelessly hold the world in their hands, this eye-opening memoir reveals what really goes on among the global elite.

An eye-opening "must" read
Revisado: 04-20-25
The inside scoop on how tech companies (and the minds that run them) REALLY work often isn't pretty. "Careless People" takes you behind the scenes into the sham, manipulation, falsehood, ignorance, and betrayed intentions that often fuel the Silicon Valley game. As someone who was woven into that scene for several decades, I applaud Sarah Wynn-Williams for finding the courage and conviction to have this story told – no holds barred – and outing some influential players with a truth we should all be aware of.

Historia
Shaman, meaning "intermediary between spirit and the natural world", has become a much overused word in the West. It's not a job title one can give oneself, and in indigenous societies a shaman is usually born to this role. Ya'Acov Darling Khan is one of the few Westerners who have been acknowledged as shamans by indigenous elders or teachers. After being hit by lightning, Ya'Acov took a 30-year journey into the heart of shamanism to seek his own healing and to learn how he could serve others with the wisdom he acquired through his experiences.

Historia
Georgia O'Keeffe, one of the most original painters America has ever produced, left behind a remarkable legacy when she died at the age of 98. Her vivid visual vocabulary, sensuous flowers, bleached bones against red sky and earth, had a stunning, profound, and lasting influence on American art in this century.

I love how the author explored Miss O'Keeffe's drives and motivations as an artist and a human. The laugh-out-loud moments were unexpected yet delightful: colorful depictions of a singular mind, a singular woman – and a world-changing artist.

Historia
It’s 1929 in New York City. In an apartment high above Lexington Avenue, the painter Georgia O’Keeffe feels stuck. At 42, she should be at the apex of her powers as an artist, and yet something is missing. Her husband - the gallerist Alfred Stieglitz, who helped build her reputation in the art world - has grown needy and insecure, not to mention unfaithful. More than this, her work has lost its fire, and she knows it. The calla lilies and poppies for which she is revered now seem careful, predictable.

Historia
Of all the things humans rely on plants for - sustenance, beauty, medicine, fragrance, flavor, fiber - surely the most curious is our use of them to change consciousness: to stimulate or calm, fiddle with or completely alter, the qualities of our mental experience. Take coffee and tea: People around the world rely on caffeine to sharpen their minds. But we do not usually think of caffeine as a drug, or our daily use as an addiction, because it is legal and socially acceptable.

Fascinating and provocative
Revisado: 08-22-21
A theme in many of Michael Pollan's work is a twist on our usual thinking about "who's in charge?" when it comes to our relationship with the natural world. Although I enjoyed all three themes in this work – curious explorations of the role opium, coffee (and a bit of tea), and mescaline play and have played in human experience, I found the explorations of coffee and mescaline most compelling. A unique perspective on coffee and how it's woven its way so inextricably into our world, and our everyday lives, set the tone for some enlightening lessons on traditional plant medicines, namely peyote and true San Pedro, and the intelligence they may be here to offer us. I found myself pausing my listen to jot down notes from several chapters, pondering Pollan's unusual questions and nodding along with his clear, entertaining explanations of subtleties gleaned from his remarkable experiences. In short – a wonderful book; I will return.

Historia
For half a century, we have been trained to believe that our right brain hemisphere is our emotional brain, while our left brain houses our rational thinking. Now neuroscience shows that it's not that simple: In fact, our emotional limbic tissue is evenly divided between our two hemispheres. Consequently, each hemisphere has both an emotional brain and a thinking brain. In this groundbreaking new book, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor presents these four distinct modules of cells as four characters that make up who we are.

Brilliant, breakthrough, and actionable
Revisado: 05-28-21
This book is nothing short of astonishing. Dr. Taylor points her unique experience and expertise at a breakthrough way of understanding how we think, and what to do if we wish to evolve our cognitive and emotional tendencies. I'm an author myself, exploring the neuroscience of mindful living and life satisfaction – yet everything I've learned so far pales in comparison to this game-changing book. Truly: read it. You'll use your brain more wisely and effectively once you do.

The long-awaited memoir from cultural icon and culinary standard bearer Alice Waters recalls the circuitous road and tumultuous times leading to the opening of what is arguably America's most influential restaurant.
