Historia
Killing the Witches revisits one of the most frightening and inexplicable episodes in American history: the events of 1692 and 1693 in Salem Village, Massachusetts. What began as a mysterious affliction of two young girls who suffered violent fits and exhibited strange behavior soon spread to other young women. Rumors of demonic possession and witchcraft consumed Salem. Soon three women were arrested under suspicion of being witches—but as the hysteria spread, more than 200 people were accused. Thirty were found guilty, twenty were executed, and others died in jail or their lives were ruined.

It read like two different books. Both were interesting, but I didn’t feel they were tied together.

In 1873 the people of Labette County, Kansas made a grisly discovery. Buried by a trailside cabin beneath an orchard of young apple trees were the remains of countless bodies. Below the cabin itself was a cellar stained with blood. The Benders, the family of four who once resided on the property were nowhere to be found. The discovery sent the local community and national newspapers into a frenzy that continued for decades, sparking an epic manhunt for the Benders.

I was very interested in the story, but the longer the book went on, the more disjointed it seemed.

Historia
Four children were abducted and murdered outside of Detroit during the winters of 1976 and 1977; their bodies eventually dumped in snow banks around the city. J. Reuben Appelman was six years old at the time the murders began and had evaded an abduction attempt during that same period, fueling a lifelong obsession with what became known as the Oakland County Child Killings. There were few credible leads and equally few credible suspects. That's what the cops had passed down to the press, and that's what the city of Detroit and J. Reuben Appelman had come to believe.

Two stories
Revisado: 01-25-25
The author must have been exploring his childhood trauma while writing this. His story is important, but it didn’t belong in this book.

It was a stretch
Revisado: 01-25-25
While the core story was interesting, the book seemed full of extraneous details, perhaps to lengthen it.

Loved the author’s storytelling
Revisado: 01-20-25
This is based on a real case I had never heard of. The legal aspect was very interesting, but so was the personal story of the author and the accused. I listened to the audiobook, and the narration was very well done. I highly recommend it to those interested in Southern settings and/or real court cases.

Historia
On January 21, 1958, nineteen-year-old Charles Starkweather changed the course of crime in the United States when he murdered the parents and sister of his fourteen-year-old girlfriend (and possible accomplice), Caril Ann Fugate, in a house on the edge of Lincoln, Nebraska. They then drove to the nearby town of Bennet, where a farmer was robbed and killed. When Starkweather’s car broke down, the teenagers who stopped to help were murdered and jammed into a storm cellar. By the time the dust settled, ten innocent people were dead and the city of Lincoln was in a state of terror.

Well-researched and honest
Revisado: 12-12-24
Although I had heard the story of Starkweather and Fugate told many times, this is the most in depth and balanced telling I have come across. The author explores not only the murders and the influence of the times on law-enforcement and juries,, but the backgrounds of both Charlie and Carol, and the childhood traumas both faced.
It was well written and included aspects of legality, mental health, and humanity. The only issue I had with the whole book is that the author seemed to think Charlie Starkweather actually looked like James Dean. To that, I protest.
