Historia
The year is 1885, and what Clara Thomas desires most is a life beyond the ordinary. As one of Canada’s first female physicians, she yearns to start her own medical practice. Unfortunately, her parents view her goals as an idle preoccupation, encouraging her instead to settle down with a man of their choosing and give up her dreams. Fleeing this conventional life, Clara marries a handsome stranger in haste and journeys to British Columbia to start a life she wants to live. Unfortunately, she shortly discovers that her husband has a crippling addiction and a tendency towards laziness and anger.

Call it what it is
Revisado: 03-18-25
This is a trashy love store. If you like that kind of book, you will enjoy this one. It was categorized as historical fiction. It is not that. Very little is about one of the first female doctors' lives. It is all about her passionate but unconsummated love with a man who is not her husband. ( everything but sex )

Historia
Frederick Fife was born with an extra helping of kindness in his heart. If he borrowed your car, he’d return it washed with a full tank of gas. The problem is there’s nobody left in Fred’s life to borrow from. At eighty-two, he’s desperately lonely, broke, and on the brink of homelessness. But Fred’s luck changes when, in a bizarre case of mistaken identity, he takes the place of grumpy Bernard Greer at the local nursing home. Now he has warm meals in his belly and a roof over his head—as long as his poker face is in better shape than his prostate and that his look-alike never turns up.

All the descriptions of body functions. Poop, pee and throwing up are everywhere.

The story could have been fun but it got too stupid. I didn’t like the reader either.

Historia
Young, brazen, beautiful, and unapologetically brilliant, Margaret Fuller accepts an invitation from Ralph Waldo Emerson, the celebrated Sage of Concord, to meet his coterie of enlightened friends. There she becomes “the radiant genius and fiery heart” of the Transcendentalists, a role model to a young Louisa May Alcott, an inspiration for Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Hester Prynne and the scandalous Scarlet Letter, a friend to Henry David Thoreau as he ventures out to Walden Pond . . . and a muse to Emerson. But Margaret craves more than poetry and interpersonal drama.

Fascinating woman
Revisado: 10-07-24
Why hasn't everyone all already heard of Margret Fuller? She should have been in all the textbooks. However, Alison Pataki isn't a good writer, in my opinion. She makes everything too sweet. The conversations are unbelievable. No one has ever talked like her characters. The narrator isn't to my liking, either. I am very glad that through this book, I now know about Margret Fuller and other historic events she was part of.

Historia
New York, 1898. The only thing more shocking than Arthur Stanhope III’s unexpected death is the revelation that his will bestows his company—and most of the vast fortune that goes with it—to the nearest male heir, leaving his mother, wife, and daughter nearly impoverished. His widow, Sylvia, quickly realizes she must set aside her grief to ensure their daughter, Adelaide, is launched into society as soon as the appropriate mourning period passes.

Very Christian and Overly sweet
Revisado: 08-13-24
This book should be under the religion category. The story is sweet and everyone is well meaning. The moral is wealth is bad and with god you can live on love alone. Parts of the plot are interesting. I didn't like all the preaching.

Not much plot
Revisado: 07-15-24
I lived through the Vietnam Years. I've heard all the heart-wrenching stories of the men and women who fought. I've heard about the horrible lives of the Vietnam people. I do not wish to diminish these powerful and difficult times, but this story has a minuscule plot. Most of the book describes the day-to-day lives of people serving and living in Vietnam. Maybe if I were a lot younger, this book would be informative.
I usually love Hannah's books, and I have read or listened to many. However, this one didn't do it for me.

Interesting story, poorly written
Revisado: 03-13-24
The way the main character describes her husband and child is nauseating. She never uses her husband's name. She calls him my beloved or my dear husband. Please! After a year of tumultuous marriage, she has no money, and she and her husband both have horrible health issues. Her husband is supporting Vincent Van Gough through his mental problems. She has a new baby, whom she describes as always perfect, complete love. She is always in ecstasy with this perfect child. Pretty hard to swallow. The whole book is written like this.

If you are extremely conservative love a heavy southern draw and want a sickly sweet love stories this book is for you. One of the main characters is 74 and sounds like she 94. Everyone is so very nice to each other. I found it nauseating.

Historia
When Marilyn Kleinman is caught making out with the rabbi’s son in front of the whole congregation, her parents ship her off to her great-aunt Ada for the summer. If anyone can save their daughter’s reputation, it’s Philadelphia’s strict premier matchmaker. Either that or Marilyn can kiss college goodbye. To Marilyn’s surprise, Ada’s not the humorless septuagenarian her mother described. Not with that platinum-blonde hair, Hermès scarf, and Cadillac convertible. She’s sharp, straight-talking, takes her job very seriously, and abides by her own rules…mostly.

Not sure how this book got o many great reviews. It's pleasant. I'm going to finish but I would never recommend this book. Maybe a 16 year old would find it cute.

Historia
Louisa has come to her parents’ house in Maine this summer with her three kids, a barely written book that has a looming deadline, and a trunkful of resentment. Louisa is hoping the crisp breeze will blow away her irritation for her life choices and replace it with enthusiasm for both her family and her writing. But all isn’t well in Maine. Louisa’s father, a retired judge and pillar of the community, is suffering from Alzheimer’s. Louisa’s mother is alternately pretending everything is fine and not pretending at all.

Didn't like any character
Revisado: 04-25-23
The women all made stupid unrealistic decisions. Example, early in the book one girl, who is in big debt, no home, boyfriend of 1 month, no job, gets pregnant and within minutes embraces it. I'm not buying it! The other woman, a married woman with 3 kids, is shocked when he parents consider selling there large home. Both women complain constantly. Really bad book!
