Not A Genre I Enjoy
Revisado: 04-15-19
Unfortunately, this book wasn't for me. Not because the characters or writing or story was bad, I'm just not a fan of this genre! I feel like people who like more dystopian like story lines would really enjoy this, I just wasn't interested in it enough to finish it.

Great Narration, I Just Couldn't Finish the Story
Revisado: 04-15-19
Unfortunately, this story line wasn't really for me. Right off the bat I didn't like the arrogance of the main hero, and I'm not sure I could continue listening to it. Perhaps fans of the rocker/bad boy trope would enjoy this book, but it's not something that I saw myself wanting to finish. I always love Bolton Hill's narration, however, so the performance gets a 5/5 from me!

Fantastic Narration; Okay Story
Revisado: 04-13-19
I only just recently read another one of Dawn Brower's books, Infinitely Marquess, so I was excited when I had to opportunity to read another one of her lovely books.
The narration of this book was absolutely fantastic. At first I didn't think I would like it (the book opens with a bunch of male characters speaking, and I initially found it hard to distinguish them apart) but as the book went on, I found I loved it.
Not only was the narration fantastic, but also Brower's writing. I always say that if I can notice the writing in an audiobook that it is good, because it's harder to listen to writing than it is to read writing. This book was certainly no exception.
The thing I didn't like about this book? I hated Lucas. There was just too many times that he said or did something that bordered on creepy, and I just couldn't get behind that. His character changed multiple times throughout the book, and I just didn't like him with Leah. It's personal preference, but it's the reason why I'm only giving the book three stars.

The Characters Weren't My Favorite
Revisado: 04-05-19
Unfortunately, I can't say that I really enjoyed this one.
The reason? I really couldn't stand any of the characters. It's just personal preference, but I really didn't connect with Meri, and the male love interest wasn't... interesting to me. I've read a lot of these sort of books, so I suppose maybe it just comes down to the fact that they didn't stick out in comparison to other characters, or maybe they were just poorly written. Overall, the characters lacked something, and the side characters were annoying and unimportant to the plot.
It's always hard to review writing when listening to an audiobook, but the narration was decent. I did find that the male narrator stereotyped the female voice a little bit, but I'm not one who should be able to judge on that - I don't think I could narrate an audiobook at all, regardless of voice types.
The idea of the plot was unique, however, I don't think I'm the best person to comment on it. Witches/paranormal is not a genre that I have ever enjoyed, and this book was certainly no exception to that. Overall, the book was very mediocre.

FANTASTIC NARRATION
Revisado: 04-02-19
I'll have to admit, going into this book I was concerned that a male narrator was narrating a story that held primarily a female POV, but Bolton Hill did an absolutely STUNNING job with all of the characters and POV. I was able to completely immerse myself into the story without that feeling of distance that some narrators create.
I'm a huge fan of romantic suspense, and while this book wasn't that... suspenseful, I thought it was well composed, funny, and cute. I loved all of the characters and the story; I could definitely see myself picking up and reading (or listening to) the rest of the books in the future.
My only two issues with this book came down to (one) I didn't really like how the plot was handled after the chapter when they were at the ranch; and (two) I was not a fan of how religion was handled in this book. Look - everyone can have their own beliefs, but in some aspects, I feel like religion was portrayed negatively.

Narration Wasn't Suited for the Story
Revisado: 03-26-19
When I applied to review this book, (my review is voluntarily being exchanged for a copy of the work) I thought that I would be okay with the whole younger man/older woman trope, I just don't think this book did it much justice. I found the heroine to be annoying, and the hero to be creepy. I don't think this would have been the case had I physically read this book because upon reflection I don't think that the narrator was suited for this story.
I'm not sure who makes the decisions in production with narration, so I'm not blaming anyone, I just don't feel like this narrator was suited for the book. She was a very talented narrator, but half of an audiobook is the narration and this one just didn't cut it. It made the characters come off as creepy and I didn't like the southern accent. Overall, 2.5 stars.

Overall Lovely Story!
Revisado: 02-28-19
I have to admit I was excited when I was approved to review this book, because as much as I love historical romance, I have never listened to a historical on audiobook. It was an absolutely delightful experience and I will certainly be picking up more historical audiobooks from here on out.
The writing of this book was very good. It leaned less away from the traditional historical romance style that I find quiet often, and had more of a true historic sounding voice. In fact, the writing reminded me of a modern Georgette Heyer, which I don't often find in historicals. I saw another review mentioned there could have been more dialogue, but I personally did not find this to be an issue.
For being such a short book, this book had excellent pacing. The romance was drawn out just enough to be enjoyable and it wasn't jumped right into, which I appreciated. I wouldn't have minded a longer book, and I did have a few issues with the ending, but overall, it was a pleasant experience.
The characters were fantastic for such a short book as well; I liked how the themes of abuse were covered in both Ryan and Annalise's stories, it allowed both characters to instantly become more fleshed out for such a short book. Additionally, I thought the hints of Cinderella in this story were very fun and subtle.
Lastly, because I listened to this on audio, I thought that the narrator (Verona Westbrook) did a decent job, though I didn't think her voice was suited for this book. It wasn't because she was a bad narrator by any means, I just felt that her voice took a lot away from the characters' stories and made it less enjoyable for me to read, hence the 3.75 stars (with the narration I just couldn't quite give it the full four stars.)
