Historia
The author of the blockbuster New York Times best sellers The Happiness Project and Happier at Home tackles the critical question: How do we change? Gretchen Rubin's answer: through habits. Habits are the invisible architecture of everyday life. It takes work to make a habit, but once that habit is set, we can harness the energy of habits to build happier, stronger, more productive lives.

Light on the insight. Heavy on the diet culture.
Revisado: 07-02-23
I found the Four Tendencies insightful but overall the book is a dud. It’s one long journal entry of her own anecdotal experience with habit formation with a few stats sprinkled in. It’s also HEAVY on the diet culture, talking often about the need for restriction, weight loss, and other diety things.

A classic but mediocre delivery.

I skipped this book in high school so decided to circle back around. I really enjoyed the story but the performance was mediocre.

Historia
Growing from a boy to a man is no easy task. Bodies are changing, social circles are evolving, hair is appearing in places it never was before - and on top of it all, there's the ever-present pressure to conform to the typical idea of what it means to be "manly". But it's easier to do if you're armed with facts. Using personal anecdotes as an overly observant mother of two boys and plenty of scientific information from her life as a neuroscientist, Mayim Bialik, PhD, star of The Big Bang Theory, talks directly to teen boys about what it means to grow from a boy to a man.

Mediocre at best…
Revisado: 06-11-23
I’m not really sure what I expected but I don’t feel like I got what I wanted out of this book. I have three boys (11, 8, and 3) so I decided to listen to this book in hopes of learning more about what to expect in approaching seasons and thought maybe it could be a resource I could encourage my boys to listen to. I feel like there are better resources out there though. It’s Perfectly Normal by Robie H. Harris and Michael Emberley has been a great resource for my oldest on sexual health for example.
The good: The importance of being aware of what media we consume and the relationships we keep will influence what we consider normal and acceptable as well as the importance of consent. I also liked her straight forwardness on the problems with drug/alcohol use.
The mediocre: she spends very little time on the actual development of boys on physical or hormonal level and instead the book is really more of a kind of self help book for boys.
The bad: her chapter on nutrition is steeped in diet culture. Bleh. She spends a lot of time reinforcing gender stereotypes claiming it’s all because of genes without talking a lot about the culture in which we operate in. She also only talks about relationships in a heteronormative way.
All in all, I didn’t think the good was worth the mediocre or bad and I won’t be sharing with my boys.

Seriously life changing…
Revisado: 01-06-23
My husband and I found YNAB (the software) many years ago and almost overnight it became a total game changer in how we “do” money. I held off reading the book until a couple years ago and then decided to listen to it again this year as a refresher. The simple straightforward easy to apply wisdom found in this book is seriously life changing. I wish this book was a part of high school reading requirements or was given to every graduate.

Historia
Do you believe your struggle with anger stems from the wrong behavior you see displayed in your children? The knee-jerk reactions and blowups you're facing are often a result of a bigger set of "triggers". Some of these are external, like a child's disobedience, back talk, or selective hearing, while others are internal, like an overflowing schedule, sleep deprivation, or perhaps your own painful experiences from childhood.

I wanted to love this book… but I didn’t.
Revisado: 02-19-22
I’ve been frustrated with the disconnect between gentle parenting and the current Christian culture. When I stumbled across this book I was so excited because I thought I found it, the missing link. The first few chapters felt strong, however, it quickly fell apart. It became a lot of “have faith” and “just stop yelling” type of advice. The book gives very few actual coping mechanisms one can use in the day to day.
I would recommend skipping this one and spend your precious time and energy pursing science based parenting advice. Siegel’s books would be a much better place to start.
