wasted potential
Revisado: 09-15-24
spent most of the book establishing a refreshing solar system focused human centric sci-fi, then it changes course and becomes the same wormhole / aliens copy paste as everything else.

20 minutes on a fart joke?
Revisado: 07-11-24
I like mistborn a lot, but Wayne went from comic relief to painfully unbearable. The 20 minute fart joke has me considering if I should just stop here. I was already turned off by the characters from other unrelated books hijacking the story, but that plus Wayne becoming far worse than jar jar Binks is a bit much.

Historia
A crusade is called to aid the Kingdom of Azgald in the distant Nordslands, and the young idealistic knight Godfrey does not hesitate to volunteer. Yet Godfrey soon learns that the greatest threat to the expedition's success is not the savage clans under High Warlord Alvir and the Great Witch of the North, Nera, or the orcs and cyclopes that fight beside the clans, but the rivalries among the crusaders themselves.

A wonderful epic fantasy!
Revisado: 06-06-24
I enjoyed this very much! The attention to historical detail we impressive, the immersion into the life of a crusader was engaging, and the high fantasy setting had some unique and interesting aspects. I especially enjoyed the archaic take on mythology, prophecy, and magic. It felt like a timeless classic. Can't wait for the sequel!

worst ending of all time
Revisado: 11-18-22
spent the entire book developing the perfect villain only to waste so much potential with a dumb twist that soured the entire experience. the worst story Dan Abnett has even done which is extremely sad and surprising because he's normally very good.

You can't survive a bolter round to the heart.
Revisado: 09-15-22
As much as I love Dan Abnett and swear by his books, they are not without flaws. Unfortunately, what was an otherwise great story was undermined no less than 4 times by dues ex machina. Most tragically, this revered author and pioneer of Warhammer fiction forgot what a bolter is. I was shocked and disappointed to hear probably the worst "plot armor" offense ever written. It would have been 4-5 stars if that bolter trigger wasn't pulled or the shot was dodged somehow, but I cannot let this go without speaking up about how bad that ending scene was...it really ruined the rest of the book.
