Frustrating Listen - Skip the audible version

The story is interesting enough, but I'm not going to be able to finish listening. I wish someone warned me and I hope you take heed. The mystery involves death and corruption concerning the team behind an online video game resulting from a created animated story that went viral. Much of the story is told through online chats that are read line by line, describing emojis and hashtagged entries. It's completely maddening to try to follow. For this one, get the actual book. You'll thank me later.

Historia
The Navajo tribe's forced march from their homeland to Fort Sumner by white soldiers and settlers is dramatically and courageously told by young Bright Morning. Bright Morning was happy as she gazed across the beautiful valley that was the home of her tribe. She turned when Black Dog barked, and it was then that she saw the Spanish slavers riding straight toward her.

Surprisingly good

I listened to this book so I could discuss it with my nephew who had been assigned to write a book report. It was not what I expected and I ended up enjoying the listen as well as the discussion we had about it. The story is told from the point of view of the female protagonist, a Native American teenager of the 1860's. The story is very direct and there's not much embellishment but as we hear of the history of the Navajo nation and how they were mistreated, displaced and forced to live as refugees in their own country, the history of the time came alive and I felt the shame of our arrogance and unreasonable need to dominate. It was a powerful story. Great character development.

Historia
This book builds on a simple premise: good teaching cannot be reduced to technique but is rooted in the identity and integrity of the teacher. Good teaching takes myriad forms but good teachers share one trait: they are authentically present in the classroom, in community with their students and their subject. They possess "a capacity for connectedness" and are able to weave a complex web of connections between themselves, their subjects, and their students, helping their students weave a world for themselves.

Great content. Annoying performance
Revisado: 10-12-13
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I loved the content of this book. It was informative and motivational. For me, it was required reading for a graduate course in leadership. It contained profound concepts about how to see yourself as an education and leader. The audience should not be limited to teachers or those who work in education. The audio version of this was problematic, however because I felt, quite often, like the playback was just a bit too slow. The reader who voiced the audio version has a very deep voice and speaks just a little too slowly. It lulled me into sleep quite a few times, and I strongly believe it was the performance, not the content. I could read the text in the book and remain quite engaged.
Would you be willing to try another one of Stefan Rudnicki’s performances?
No. Probably not.
