Poignant and powerful
Revisado: 08-20-24
I confess that I don't remember paying much attention to Leah's departure from the "Church" of Scientology when it happened. I came across a recent YouTube video of her talking about some of her experiences, and was intrigued, so got the book. Wow! It's shocking, gripping, tragic in ways, and heartbreaking, but it's also a story of resilience, growth, claiming one's own power, openness to new discoveries in faith and life, and finding a new sense of self in the midst of pain and challenge. I admire Leah so much! There are a lot of technical details about the "Church" that can be confusing, but don't let that stop you from listening to the end. It's worth it. I love that she reads her book herself. That definitely adds to the story.
Here's to all the troublemakers! Thank you for causing "good trouble," Leah.

Historia
Tokyo resident Keiko Furukara has never fit in - neither in her family, nor in school - but when at the age of 18 she begins working at the Hiiromachi branch of national convenience store chain Smile Mart, she realizes instantly that she has found her purpose in life. Delighted to be able to exist in a place where the rules of social interaction are crystal clear (many are laid out line-by-line in the store's manual), Keiko does her best to copy the dress, mannerisms, and mode of speech of her colleagues, playing the part of a "normal" person excellently, more or less.

A Wonderful Surprise
Revisado: 08-22-23
I wasn't sure what to expect from this story, but was delighted to discover not only a fascinating tale of one who doesn't fit in for various reasons and her efforts to create a life that works for her, but also some interesting insights into Japanese culture. To top it off, the narration was superb. Highly recommended!

Somewhat disappointing
Revisado: 01-29-23
While there were parts of this story that were initially intriguing, it soon became predictable. The ending was unsatisfying to me, though perhaps it wouldn't be for others. But no spoilers! At times it was hard to tell which character was speaking, a minor issue. I think it was a freebie, and it passed the time while driving, but I'm glad I didn't pay for it.

Overall I really enjoyed the story, although the twists and turns were sometimes confusing. (I might not have been paying enough attention.) At times, the narration was irksome, as the dialects were periodically inconsistent. Loved the humor infused in the story.

The story was poignant and painful in how it reflected the way things were for lgbtq people in the 50s, the characters memorable, the narration excellent. Would enjoy a follow-up or spin-off. I recommend this!

Historia
In her mesmerizing fourth work of fiction, Sue Monk Kidd takes an audacious approach to history and brings her acclaimed narrative gifts to imagine the story of a young woman named Ana. Raised in a wealthy family with ties to the ruler of Galilee, she is rebellious and ambitious, with a brilliant mind and a daring spirit. She engages in furtive scholarly pursuits and writes narratives about neglected and silenced women. Ana is expected to marry an older widower, a prospect that horrifies her. An encounter with 18-year-old Jesus changes everything.

Thought provoking!
Revisado: 04-09-22
This was recommended by a seminary professor friend, and since I enjoy Sue Monk Kidd already, I immediately undertook the listening. I use that term simply because it is long, but the story is well worth it. I never found it boring, and was intrigued by the imaginative supplements to the stories of Jesus that we think we know. Those who are rigid in their faith and beliefs about Jesus will likely not enjoy it. One must come with an open mind. I found it engaging, and as my headline says, thought provoking. There were times when the narrator's pronunciation surprised me but aside from that I thought she was very good. As a Christian pastor, I dont find this story sacrilegious (a critique I have read), and I have no reservations in recommending this especially to those who understand the broadness of God and of faith, and who know our actual knowledge about Jesus is limited.
